Kaspersky/ UltraAV debacle

Kaspersky security software is banned in America: What you need to know

I am one of the lucky sob’s that got bit by this situation. I have been using Kaspersky products since 2009 and I only found out about the change when two of my three systems were upgraded without my consent last night.

For some fun reading here are some threads on the joy of uninstalling this malware…

Well that sucks!

I was usuing Kaspersky AV, but ditched it a few years ago, because Russia.

Since then, based on reviews, I have been using Bitdefender :

I can recommend it as an alternative.

More knowledgable folks here can feel free to chime in if they think that is a wise choice or not, but (in conjunction with basic security practices) it has kept our PC, Laptop and mobile/cell phones malware free & I am using their VPN on my mobile. Bundled like that it is also relatively cheap.

Thanks for the links, I was speaking to someone today about this and I’ll send them along!

That is what I intend to use going forward. Thanks for helping to confirm my choice. :+1:

Not sure why but one of the systems, Mom’s, that UltraAV hijacked locked up tighter than a drum yesterday morning. Even Ctrl/Alt/Del did not work so I had to hold the power button down until the computer shut off.

I waited fifteen minutes before I turned the computer on again and it was in a system recovery loop. I gave it four hours before I shut the computer down again figuring that the SSD was beyond repair.

I was more than mildly irritated at this turn of events but this SSD is a clone of another so all was not lost. I didn’t have another 2tb drive so I went out and bought a couple inexpensive HDD’s to create another clone of my original drive. By the time I got home I was not in any mood to clone the drive so I got everything together to do it today and went and watched a movie.

This morning I ran a few errands and while I was out I remembered about booting up in safe mode so I figured I would give that a whirl when I got home. The computer did not boot up in safe mode but it did give me the option to use a restore point.

I think the restore point I chose restored the system to its original state which is before I installed Kaspersky which would also mean that UltraAV will be gone too. :crossed_fingers:

Kaspersky is a piece of software developed in concert with the Russian FSB. It’s really little more than a turd-filled paper bag placed in front of your door and set on fire. That blue screen is the software ringing your doorbell.

Actually that blue screen you see in the image in my prior post is Lenovo’s recovery process. I was correct in thinking that the system restore point I used took the system back to its original state. I had to enter all the system information and accept Microsft’s terms again.

At this time there is No Kasperksy, No UltraAV, but there is an out of date Macafee virus software program that I need to uninstall. However before I do anything else I intend to clone this drive in its current state.

Sorry. Should’ve known you knew. I don’t think anyone in the US uses Kaspersky anymore. Good luck getting it sorted.
