Landing ARMA 3 Helicopters Without Exploding

Um, no thanks. Here’s a pic you posted above with the exact thing I’m talking about! :grimacing:

I’d hate to be Phillip in that pic.

I watched “OperatorDrewski” violating this gun safety 101 offense so much yesterday it made me sick. This is what you learn NOT to do when you’re five years old and it continues as a serious offense into all branches of the military.

Sweeping friendlies to his hearts content ha ha! That whole vid is BS.

Veterans in Command? Lazy vets maybe.

That’s the only reason you don’t do that? Oh man, you guys crack me up.

 Dude, professional soldiers flag eachother all the time in firefights. It’s not good, certainly undesirable, and everyone trains to prevent it as much as possible, but watch any video of a firefight with more than one rifleman in the frame, and there’s a good chance you’ll see an incident where one is flagging the other briefly. You try to minimize it and avoid it, but carry a rifle in a stressful situation where you’re covering multiple angles in conjunction with your battle buddy, and it will happen.

It’s worse in situations where everyone present is casual with their weapons to the point of complacency with muzzle safety. I’ve seen it in person, and I’ve seen in hundreds of times watching videos with the armed forces of dozens of western militaries, not to even mention 3rd world ones where training is less than ideal. Heck, there was a recent video of Delta/CAG/Whatever they call themselves now on a CQB training exercise where they were flagging and crossing eachother’s lines like crazy in the name of speed and violence of action.

That said, it’s hard to get too worked up about it when it happens in a video game, especially one that’s 10 years old and requires you to double-tap L CTRL to lower your weapon. :upside_down_face:

I remember that. I got the game during the invitation Alpha. To say it was a little rough is quite the understatement. It’s sure come a long way, and the massive ambition of the developers and inherent capability of the engine is nothing short of amazing. Think about what all it can do convincingly, from being a helicopter sim to tanks/infantry to zombies/apocalypse to that Altis Life RPG wierdness that people get into. Heck, there was even a dinosaur mod with raptors with fairly convincing hunting behavior that made for some fun co-op. I can’t think of another engine that can do all of that.

At the heart of it, the scripting language that Arma uses is wonderfully flexible, powerful, and accessible. I know nothing about modding aside from hitting subscribe, but the fact that I can drop into the editor and write a few lines into the INIT field of a unit to make stuff happen (or an .SQF file), and it’s the same basic language that they were using in 2001 in the O:FP days, is pretty great.

this setdamage 1; this inflame true;

Heck, I’ve been in some firefights in ARMA where the whole fire team is firing and then somebody re-positions without looking and runs across somebody firing The person firing can’t see the other person as they’re looking down the scope/sight.

Yup! I’ve been that guy, on both ends of it.

I think responsibility falls on both parties, the shooter to maintain fire discipline and SA, and the shootee to have enough SA not to go running across lines of fire. Running through friendly tracers from an M249 laying down a base of fire is not healthy. And just yelling “Crossing!” as you do it doesn’t make it okay lol.

This happens in every shooter game though, not just Arma. I had it happen (and did it a couple times) in GB just last week.

You can remap the key to whatever’s convenient for you.

I’d really recommend a proper gaming mouse with enough buttons on it. I’ve been using the following mouse and similar for a long time. You can map grenade, primary weapon, secondary weapon, zoom in/out, first/third person and you can map LCrtl to make it simpler.

Of course, I just use LCTRL because I’m lazy.

Logitech G604 Lightspeed Wireless Gaming Mouse

I’m such a creature of habit that I’ve just stuck to the same controls since 2013. I do have a decent mouse, but I use the two extra buttons for zoom, and keep the action menu on the mouse wheel.

I remember the disastrous epidemic of fragging that occurred in early MP when people tried to change gear with the same key Arma 2 used, and plopped down a fresh grenade right at everyone’s feet!

Quickly made that G button a double-tap key.

I think ArmA was the reason I started using MMO mice. Currently using and really liking the Redragon M913 … it has 12 thumb bottons lol! (I only use the ones I can find by feel the easiest).

Oh man, this thread is so off the rails. Sorry.

Nah, completely off topic is kind of a Mud Spike signature move when talking gaming.

I got a Razer a while back and the extra thumb button and middle buttons have been handy in a few titles. When I was playing MechWarrior Online heavily that would have been a really nice for different weapons groups or alpha strikes.

Back to ARMA3, until DCS get the Kiowa or a payware AH-6, it’s my best option for light gunship flying. Thought I do agree it’s getting a little long in the tooth on some aspects.
