LEGO Technic - Developing technical minds since 1982 1977
Edit. It was just rebranded Technic in 82.
I was really happy with how the Brooke-class FFG looks on display alongside my USS Oriskany. It really adds a great sense of scale. So I decided that the CV-6 Enterprise needs an appropriate escort as well. I present the Gleaves-class destroyer. These ships bore the brunt of escort duty at the carrier battles in 1942 and were heavily engaged with Japanese destroyers, cruiser and even battleships in the deadly waters around Guadalcanal. Designing these smaller ships at 1:300 scale is quite challenging but a lot of fun.
The rover looks nice, but like almost everything Lego in the past years seems blatantly overpriced. Also those annoying blue technic pins…
Also in the same vein there will be the Lego SLS this month:
I have been really looking forward to this for a long time, but turns out that the set is full of stickers (the old Lego Saturn V was fully printed). I just can’t accept how Lego is doing this expensive display models with cheap stickers. They are truly milking every cent from their customers.
Look how they can’t even get the white color of the sticker the same white as the piece (and that will only get worse as the color of the piece degrades over time):
Also how N AS A is stickered here. Remember, this is a €260 display model!
I have been really disappointed by Lego in the past years. Very expensive and a lot of substandard quality.
So, they had a May the 4th sale going… And you could build an X-Wing and a Yoda figure and take it home with you.
It would be impolite to not buy something, right…?
Got the Crimson Firehawk (that Nubbs minifig is going to be a collectors item someday, not that the kids care), and a couple of other small things for the kids, and that put me over the threshold for the free gift things. Pictures to follow when they ship.
Gotta love Cobi for their choice of subjects…
I only wish LEGO would let themselves be inspired.
How could I reject a Cessna 172? The world famous pilot maker and the type I soloed in… I just had to have it, of course. Ok, perhaps it looks more like a cross between a 152 and a 172, but hey… It’s definitely 100% cute!
Cobi is amazing! I think our Cobi collection is starting to surpass Lego at this point.
Should be easy to mod some space in the nose for some lead fishing weights and ditch the clear strut.
Since i was a kid I have been wanting to build the yellow house and white boat, from the bottom half of this page in the 1981 226 LEGO IDEA BOOK.
I have been considering building it in other colours.
Today it hit me that I could try to build them in 3D in Studio 2.0 from Bricklink.
Hours later i have this:
And while i was at it I also made some instructions for them.
226 pg39 blue white boat instructions.pdf (491.8 KB)
(The house instructions are to big to be uploaded here)
Building and viewing them in 3D has been enough for me, so now I don’t have to do it IRL.
Happy LEGO Building
We’ve probably discussed this on here but found out about this today
We’re still working on remembering to clean up all the toys when we’re done playing (ADHD plus ASD 2 makes for a lot of challenges) before we get our own sets, but while we’re dialing in the therapies and medications, we can sometimes play with Dad’s sets.
Oh the temptation. LOL
You’re gonna need a bigger boat!
Oriskany is getting a brother. First prototype of the flight deck using any pieces I could scrap together, in order to get all the angles figured out. Sourcing the pieces in the correct colors just for the flight deck is going to be expensive…
The flight deck for USS Midway is getting colors as I keep sourcing the necessary parts:
That is over €200 so far just for the flight deck… Ouch Making these own creations is really expensive. But at least I am mostly set for the flight deck now. The green and grey areas will extend down into the hull for which I already have the graphite colored bricks. To build the hull I have a pretty good stock, but I expect it will probably require at least another €100.
This time I tried to lay in the markings around the elevators. I also decided to sacrifice continuous markings for the landing area and build in the outlines for the jet blast deflectors with thin yellow tiles. Also the yellow E for the Battle Effectiveness Award turned out quite nice
The tapering catapult tracks are such defining feature for Midway that I wanted to have it. Unfortunately the angle is too shallow for any available parts, so I had to make them in a staggered Minecraft-look. I’m not too happy about it but there is no other way (on Oriskany I did straight catapults, even though they too should be at an angle). At least I could buy Lego parts in flat-silver color for the catapults, which should look quite nice in the end.
Last week I spent on building the island. It’s mostly complete, but there are still placeholder colors in the masts. I think making the ship’s superstructure is always the most difficult part. So many shapes, extensions, pathways, platforms, railings, masts, antennas etc. Most of which is way too small to recreate at that scale. So there is always the question of which details to do (even if not entirely in scale) and which to omit, in order to capture something that is recognizable.
I am very happy that at this small scale and in a very difficult spot it has been possible to insert a somewhat recognizable 41 (on both sides).
Now that most things at the flight deck are defined, it’s time to build an actual ship uinder it
Anyone have a clue if this is a scratch built set? How does this actually work because I’m salivating.
Apart from calling it “hets” its HET
I’ve told my wife that when she finally realises she married a moron and vanishes, I’m going to buy an M1070 and travel the world and break down a lot
