Magnitude 3 F4U-1D Corsair

The Kiowa had FM wonkiness, too.

That’s always going to be the case and when you’re dealing with the stupid levels of torque that the Corsair had? Yeah. I expect there to be something.

I’d never let my enjoyment hinge on the opinions of grognards, though.

This, indeed, is a very stupid thing to base any opinion upon.

Grognard is kind of a downgrade from “Ouragan” or “Mystere” when it comes to French aircraft names.

Mirage on the other hand…

I think what’s going over at hoggit is that they expect niche departure characteristics to be fully modeled in an initial release. Or they’re just Hornet heathens who can’t handle anything that requires the usage of feet, so they’re hamfisting it into a departure and not knowing it’s a departure.

Mirage? C’est magnifique!

I always expect bizarre departure behavior to be lost in the sim. Those little odd quirks of falling out of envelope and losing lift unique to each type? No sim is going to capture those perfectly in these types of aircraft. That’s one of the more difficult behaviors to model and it’s perfectly fine to just say “That’s fine.” After all, old engineering maxim: Perfect is the enemy of good enough.

I especially do not expect it from helicopters since those are witchcraft, anyways.

Control inputs need some serious address, but damn it feel so good to fly.

Something with this much torque flying sideways? I’d expect that!

We’re still learning how to rig the controls (curves in the assignment menu) so the plane will be easier to fly, but basic stick and rudder skills need to be applied!

It does feel like the inputs need adjustment in the backend, but DCS provides the absolute best input editing I’ve ever seen in a game, so it isn’t acute.

The sounds are in dire need of improvement. They don’t sound awful, certainly not CEII levels, but they don’t provide the needed feedback.

I love the art work and happy to have a WWII carrier capable fighter but the sound is a pretty huge let down and for some reason I find her incredibly easy to fly, she feels a bit like on rails to me. Barely any rudder required to counter the torque on take off and landing is dead easy. It’s hard to put my finger on it but she doesn’t feel as dynamic as other DCS warbirds. Ground handling is another thing I find questionable. Even with an unlocked tail wheel the Corsair just doesn’t want to turn and immediately straightens out when you let off the brake which means you need a ridiculous amount of power to do tight turns.

I haven’t taken her to her limits, just flew around the Mariana’s and landed a few times on land and on the carrier but compared to the other warbirds, especially the P-47 or P-51, I can’t help but feel like there’s something missing and a large part of WWII flight simming is in a convincing FM. I really hope they can iron out these kinks because she looks absolutely stunning and once we get some more PTO assets (especially Japanese warbirds, even if only ai) I can see myself enjoying this one quite a bit. I am a sucker for carrier ops so in theory this is right down my alley.

second flight… better controls mapped … managed to take off, fly around the island, get guns working and then land (to anyone who has flown with me and my own surprise ) in one piece

I did find the flight model a bit twitchy, and floaty on the landing

Probably coming in a little fast. She’ll plonk right down and stay down if you do it by the book

The hook stops it in a heartbeat as well but the approach is a bit scary when coming in on speed. Here I am still a little too fast which is why I have pretty good view of the carrier:

Tinker with saturation settings, it really helps.

So… I had a Corsair day yesterday. Got up early to go to the Gym but was interupted by the release. Managed to make the gym then played with the Corsair the rest of the day. I found it different than the T-bolt witch is nice for variety. Starting it was pretty easy but take off was another story. Then I realized that the rudder was backwards and it would not reverse until I restarted the game… Hummm… Ok, off I went and while she is a a Hell of a Beast, I will enjoy getting to know her. Plunked her down on Batumi without any problems and taxied slowly to my spot.
The Training missions are EXCELLENT without much fanfare and fluff. You go straight to the point. First Carrier attempt I ended up a Fireball. Second attempt i was on the deck. You dont land it… You just get above the deck and pull the Throttle and she quits flying and you Plow on to the deck. But again, she is one tough beast.
I am going to savor this…
