Well, it all just clicked tonight. I hsve finally conquered the VRS!!!
My first landing from forward flight with ZERO damage!!!

Once i had that procedure nailed its a lot easier.

Cockiness ensued…but procedure followed and BOOMTOWN!! intact helicopter. confidence in ability. happy pilot!

lesson learned. RTFM!!!

Currently being mighty frustrated with the lovely spitfire. I flew it too little the last month and my ability to land that without a prang has deteriorated. gah. I hope the stick extension I bought gets here soon, perhaps that’ll help.

As with everything I discovered the secret it to slow down and use the instruments rather than the seat of the pants.

Controlling the descent more and using the collective less but with more precise and positive corrections has paid so many dividends.
I’m still very much at the baby steps part of learning and admittedly I haven’t had much free time lately but it’s a lovely feeling making progress on something that I struggled with.

Once you control the descent and keep it slow and steady the vrs is actually quite easy to avoid. It gives you plenty of warning and it’s easy to kill at the first stages.
Plummeting to the ground like airwolf and trying to catch it was my problem. Positive controlled loss of height. I’m very pleased.

I see a lot of mudspike are flying the spit lately… Have i missed something? I fly the tf-51d a fair bit on practise air displays but wouldn’t mind a few guns to play with but I really really don’t want another bloody module at the moment lol

I’ve also been flying the Spit and the ‘Stang some as of late. Good to hear a piston engine roaring again.

I dont know… I have Spit IX in xplane :slight_smile:

…and make the vertical descent as short as possible i.e. come in on speed as low as possible.

Dont know yet :slight_smile: Had only two flights with it I guess ( despite I bought it in the sale before this Xmas one ).
Its great as it saves you same looking into the map. Little clumsy to use with the mouse but maybe I need to get used to it a little.

Awe gosh come on now comrades! The Mi-8 has no less than 3 separate Nav systems. All of which are gloriously clunky Soviet era electronics…in fact they probably use tubes instead of transistors! …and you want to ruin the whole “Mi-8 Experience” with capitalist imperialist GPS?

Is helicopter. Why nav computer? Use compass, many of the reliable. Have Dmitri whip wang out back, watch ■■■■ stream down, find direction. If Olga yells from below, too far south!

Speaking of Nav systems…not really but sort of…

In the Mi-8 manual, page 127, it describes a way to use the R-828 with the ARK-UD to allow “for homing on frequencies outside the normal ARK-UD presets.” Pager 117 describes the R-828 set up.

This is a neat feature since, theoretically, one could contact an airfield, FARP or any ground unit and have the transmit on R-828 frequencies (20-59.975 Mhz). The Low end is technically in the HF spectrum which technically means that signal propagation is much farther…not sure if that aspect is modeled in DCS but regardless, it would be a more realistic way of homing in to something using a normal (non-emergency/guard) frequency.

I built a quick test mission. Mi-8 on the ramp at Batumi and two transmitters at Kobuletti, approx 43 km away. One transmitter is a triggered RADIO TRANSMISSION, 27 Mhz, FM, looped audio. The other is a vehicle with Advanced WP actions Set Frequency 25.7 and Transmit Message (looped) on. I figured one should work.

Neither do. I am wondering if it has not been implemented? Or the “request a tone modulated signal from the ground station operator for the desired frequency”(page 117) requires scripting?

My affection for this bird hasn’t subsided since March, she really is quite fun.

I’m up to mission 9 or 10 in the Oilfields campaign and I’m considering getting the Border campaign after that. This will be the first DCS campaign I’ll actually finish, which says something. Most of the missions are about 1hr in duration, which really helps.

One tip/trick that I’ve used more and more is the “poke head out the window” function (external load view button). Probably would be pretty funky in VR as it tilts the pilots head to look straight down…but in 2D it works great to look behind you after an attack run to check for tracers / MANPADS launches, and to assess weapons effect…or to check the exact landing site location before the windward turn into landing.

Basically you press the button, the pilot puts his head out the side window and looks straight down - then you tilt your view (with TrackIR) right/left (depending on which seat you’re flying) to look behind you along the fuselage it gives you a great rear view up to about 5/7 o’clock. :+1:

In VR it’s even better, as you just twist in your seat and put your head outside your window. (you do need some room next to your cockpit seat for it, can’t be sitting next to a wall, that’s painful and embarassing)

That’s interesting - with TrackIR, the window frame is a 6DOF limit, so regardless of whether it is open or closed, you can’t take your viewpoint outside without the special button.

Come to think of it, I think that’s the case with most aircraft - even with the canopy open, you can’t move the pilots head past where the glass would be.

Dcs has no such limit on VR. On il2, which does, I always turn it off, because its very jarring for the VR experience to suddenly stop tracking, even more so than phasing your head through cockpit structure.

Yes, I admit sticking my head through the MiG-21’s canopy at near Mach speed to get a better look at a target area…

I once closed the cockpit on the tomcat while I was looking out… that fake decapitation was a weird feeling
