I hate modern sound mixing as well.
One of the few advantages that German dubbed movies have is that the dubbed audio is a bit louder though, so I usually don’t need subtitles.
Newer movies have separate sound channel in Atmos Mode, I just started piping that channel to center on the surround sound, and turning that channel up, while keeping others lower, but it doesnt help in old movies or TV shows.
OH we have subtitles on everything, whether it’s American, British, Australian or whatever else. It just helps so much.

It’s also useful when you’re around those people who CANNOT speak unless they are louder than every other noise around them.
So you raise the volume to hear, they talk louder, you raise it again, they talk even louder, you raise it again, they shout that they can’t hear themselves think.
Maybe if you didn’t think OUT LOUD and mistake it for talking…
I love how even the subtitles to Snatch had no idea what they were saying.

ROFLMAO Brilliant!
I totally agree with the comments about the mixing in Nolan films. My home theatre amp has a “dialog boost” setting that helped a lot with Interstellar, but Tenet is basically just a silent movie where they forgot the title cards so far as I’m concerned!
