Just curious to see how often Mudspike members still go to the movie theater. In 2024 I actually saw 7 movies in the theater which was a huge jump for me compared to 2023.
The last movie I saw in a cinema wasā¦ 2019 I think.
I just donāt like it. Too loud, too many people, too expensive for what you get, I canāt pause and go to the toilet, food is ridiculously expensive.
So yeah, not for me. I can wait a few months (or years) and watch the movie at home, with my cat on my lap.
Once or twice a year for lack of good movies. Usually in Switzerland, so there is a break and an option for original synchro! And I appreciate that. I usually go with old friends from school/university.
Like the big screen, the sound, the smell, the social aspect. But who had this idiot idea of handing out coke and popcorn in frickinā buckets? It turns me off. A beer is all I get these days, hence the required break.
I agree with @Aginorā¦ Too loud and too expensive.
BUT
Some movies really deserve at least one view in the theaters.
For instance the two Dune were majestic.
I did buy them on Amazon eventually, but the first time was kinda due to happen in cinemas.
That said, not every movie deserves it.
I was dragged to watch Deadpool & Wolverine and it was okay.
Could have saved the money but it was also a social occasion to spend time with a friend.
As happened with Top Gun Maverick in the Netherlands.
I would have never gone alone, but the friends made all the difference
We though to have a monthly go, but after three months without a movie that deserved the money we kinda let it go.
I actually saw 6 last year, more than I thought but my AMC app had them all there.
Same number as I saw in 2023, too. Only 4 in 2022.
Now I may have missed one or two that I saw at a non-AMC theater, but thatās quite rare so Iām not really spending time trying to remember.
I also saw the Villeneuve Dune in the theater and Iām very glad I did.
I saw Dracula Nosferatu with my daughter last month. The movie was weird and great. The cinema experience was meh. We used our local town cinema just to support it. But the screens a not well maintained. The only saving grace to a theater is that they force all but the most apish of us to not look at our devices. So everyone is more focused on the film than they would be in the living roomā¦usually. Having said that, unless it becomes a āgrandkidā thing in a few years, my cinema days are pretty much over.
Im so over cinemas. People act horrendously these days and i canāt cope.
Little shits in front of us last time were actually vaping. I hate it
Iām pretty much done with cinemas. Iāve only gone once since the pandemic began ā to see Furiosa ā and I missed several things that I had at home, like subtitles, being able to pause to use the restroom, etc.
I prefer the comforts of my home, to a cinema. But, just like @komemiute I had a great time watching Dune on a movie screen. And watching the premiere of Top Gun Maverick, together with friends and colleagues, all adult and then some, drinking beer and feeling the nostalgia, was incredible. The air in the cinema must have been full of dust, when they buried Icemanā¦
I know it is just a big budget action movieā¦but a lot of Top Gun Maverick hit home for my generation. The part where Maverick is looking into the bar after being thrown out of it. I was going through my divorce at that point and the feeling of being on the outside looking inā¦washed upā¦aloneā¦ Damn that one got to me.
For usā¦ it depends.
I tend to agree with most here that the ācinemaā experience is often more trouble than it is worth (particularly obnoxious patrons); but there are some movies that you have to see on the big screen.
The biggest deciding factor - is it worth the three hour round trip to the nearest cinema?
Mine is under 2 miles away, so thatās not a factor! And my town is small enough that itās rarely crowded.
The 2 contributing factors to me not going are time and money.
Time: Thanks to 20 minutes of commercials before the start time, and then 25 minutes of trailers and theater self-promotion ads (STFU Nicole Kidman!!! I donāt care about your opinion on movies!), with a typical (for today) 2.5 hr film Iām looking at being in that seat over 3 hrs and I donāt always have that to spend.
Money: Even going the matinee times before 4PM the cost is ever increasing, especially if you wanted to do the āpopcorn and drinkā experience too. So unless itās something I REALLY want to see, Iām never just going on a lark for a weekend experience like I did in the 90s/00s.
When itās far cheaper to buy the 4K UHD BD and watch it at home on my OLED TV with 7.1.2 Atmos setup, I usually just wait.
This. I did see TG Mav there though. āTG-The Revenge of Gooseā might pull me back in.
For me it was Interstellar. Wasnāt in the theatre though. The scene at the end where heās behind the book self. Got as emotional as I ever do. Turns outā¦I was watching this about the time my father was passing away (unexpectedly) - to the hour! Interesting.
I kind of miss drive-inās.
Good for kids; spent most of my time running around the place with others, doing stupid kid things - not really watching the movie.
Oh, and dates; took the prom queen to one. She was WAAAY outta my league. Just a really sweet girl. Took me like 2 hours to work up the courage to kiss her. No clue what the movie was.
Saw Top Gun: Maverick in the theatre. Itās also the last time I saw a major release within the first couple of weeks of release.
I think theatres are still relevant, the problem is most new-release movies arenāt!
At the drive-in we frequented in high school, the family of a girl in my class owned the theater. Her creepy uncle worked in the snack bar and often would wonder around and peep into cars, usually late in the show. He had a habit of showing up at the worst, or best, moment, depending on your point of view.
My first time experiencing it, by the time I got presentable enough to report it to management, their response was that he was harmless. In fact, most of my friends made light of it and wondered why I was so worked up.
I learned to ignore the dark figure on the other side of the fogged up glass. The things we do for love.
I love going to the movies, in college 25+ years ago Iād go every Friday night.
The wife, not so much. Her reasons are very much in line with everyoneās reasons listed above. Our movie taste differs, so I donāt watch many at home (I think Iāve watched an actual movie at home on my own accord maybe twice in the last 5 years at home). I have made it to the theater a handful of times since Covid, but thatās about it.
Iād love to get back to going to the theater regularly, but life hasnāt been conducive to it.
I still occasionally go to theaters but the experience in Japan is quite different. Seats are reserved in advance and the audience is dead quiet, never leaving until the end credits completely end. My only two reasons for not going these days are the lack of movies that interest me and the horrible sound mixing that makes everything louder than it should be.
