My new flightsim...

For me…not sufficient in the least. Our checkrides are all about crew interaction. The flying part is not the challenge. And what flying exists that IS challenging, like V1 cuts and single-engine work, isn’t simulated accurately; so the muscle training can be negative. The preparation that is not specifically crew related has to do with limitations, flows, calls, approach criteria, etc, all of which can as easily be studied on paper as by watching electrons swim on a screen. There is real retention value in chair flying. It requires a bit of a deep dig mentally where a sim can be more of a show. Plus, without the tunnel of a screen or headset, it is much easier to imagine the person sitting next to you.

Absolutely!
But having the choice between my home made paper tiger and interactive VR training, I would go with VR.
I think there is real potential in VR for education in many areas.
I’m learning flows right now. Just memorizing them could work. But without knowing exactly where the switch is on the panel, knowing the name of the switch isn’t worth much. So you need to know both. Nothing beats sitting in the cockpit, for learning this, to train your muscle memory. So, the next best thing, I believe, is sitting in a virtual cockpit. The 3D depth perception is good enough to get a good feel for where the switch is, in space.

But hey, it’s not brain surgery. A paper tiger cockpit will get you there

pucker factor !

flightsim aircraft make people addicts. Even if you dont like the plane you need to buy it just so you have it.

If that doesn’t strike a chord, says the guy with every single DCS module.

Thanks!
I’d say «luck has nothing to do with it», but I know better than that!

Do you tell yourself that you can stop at any given time, whenever you want to…?

I can stop at any given time that there are no more modules left to buy ;). It’s going to be an expensive few months what with the Harrier, Hornet, Tomcat and the Hormuz map.
