Saw this on the DCS forums, pretty epic Instructor here.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is running Windows XP! Whatever “floats their boat” I guess. It just seems to be a really backwards decision to me considering …
Lots of ships still are, not just military but also civilian. Most of these can barely receive any internet anyway and the system that do connect to the internet are isolated.
The Register has run a bunch of articles about it a long long time ago(and more recently I see).
I do hope they’ve got it all isolated pretty well though. Nothing wrong with using old software(if it works, it works) though. Aviation is rife with it too.
If it works, it’s not outdated. @TheAlmightySnark is right - reliable, dependable, and well understood its much, much more important than cutting edge.
As for vulnerability to cyber attacks, part of the reason warships have such high crew requirements is because of the lack of large - scale automation aboard for strictly this reason. This was actually touched on in the BSG reimage - all the various networks through the ship are physically separated to prevent an attack on one network being able to jump over to any others.
Awesome find. Love the (what appears to be) JDAM with delay fusing lifting up the van.
There is no better apportioned Hornet than the F. Something about the extended cockpit looks so very right on the air frame.

Cool, pull the bells so the nuke flash doesn’t blind anybody!
Hmmm wondering if there is a “weight on wheels” switch that effects the nozzle angle. Just after the ramp it appears the nozzle quickly moves down more degrees.
RAF photo competition results.
Some nice pics
We were walking the dog in a random park today and to my surprise two Raptors flew right over us! Ya gotta love that sound! Probably on their way back to the US after the last day of the Canadian International Airshow. Weird thing is I think only one appeared at the airshow(?). I’m still wondering why I saw two of them? They weren’t in close formation … one passed, and then another directly behind him. Do they travel in pairs for some reason?
Here’s some actual airshow footage … love the Raptor/Mustang formation flying at the end …
It’s not uncommon to send a second aircraft as a backup in case something goes wrong with the first one, especially if the demo team has a budget high enough
