New Helicopter sim by Microprose: Gunship Origins

I just posted about this. I’ll go back and delete mine, since yours is here. I’m definitely looking forward to the release because this takes me down memory lane to my old GS 2000, Gunship!, and Longbow series days. Thanks for sharing.

Popped up in my feed this morning. Me am excited. I sometimes miss my old Gunship 2000 and Longbow days. This should satisfy a sweet spot for those days I don’t feel like tackling the DCS Apache.

The system requirements do not list a GPU.

Been talking to the dev, and their love of Gunship 2000 makes me VERY excited and hopeful about this.

Gunship 2000 is very playable these days. This awesome guy has guides on getting the Longbow games running.

Anybody seen any mention of VR in Gunship Origins?

Unfortunately not mentioned on the steam page … but we can hope, I am waiting for nuclear option to get vr before picking it up

There’s a lengthy discussion about it on Steam, and the dev is open to it:

It’s amusing how spoiled we can be as simmers. I haven’t read the thread yet, but I can admit that I’ve become a bit of a VR junkie. I can’t enjoy my sims without VR (I’ve tried, even with my TrackIR). Still, I think regarding Gunship, I’ll be able to manage.

Well, when new toys comes along, nobody wants to play with the old… It’s the natural order of things.

I’m just thinking that GS Origins look like it would be a great VR sim as they have modelled the pit in full 3D. It also looks like it’s easier on the resources, which isn’t a bad thing for VR…

I still play Gunship 2000 and F-117A regularly. I don’t see the need for VR at all, but that’s just me.

Yup. Use VR once and you are assimilated by the Borg

I’ve used VR. It’s nice, but I don’t see it as a necessity.

Ah. Species 8472 was able to resist assimilation as well

I’ll see myself out

Seconded, maybe if I used a newer headset on a beefier system I’d be smitten too. For the moment though, pancake with a hatswitch to pan my views around like it’s 1999 still works just fine.

Who would want to assimilate those literal nightmare factories?

This is why recommending someone a VR headset is close to impossible.
The experience will vary.

I’ve enjoyed sims since the 80’s, before there was even a hat switch on the joystick. Sims have always been fun for me. No doubt about that.
The experience grew with the hat switch, padlock, Track IR, increasing monitor size, 3D acceleration, HOTAS, etc.
But the biggest influence in first person simulations has got to be VR, in my opinion.
It increases the immersion factor and makes simming more physical.

But, as always, to each their own. :vr:

For me I don’t want to get near someone even trying a flight sim in VR, let alone putting the thing on my head.

The idea of getting into another hardware upgrade, if only I had better/faster/more powerful cpu/ram/graphics card cycle sounds horrendous - after ages of that, finally having a system that runs flight sims pretty much fine (in the grand scheme) I just can’t go back.

This also comes down to personality of course, I just know I’d probably start off at whatever the equivalent of ‘medium’ is, go "hmm what does it look like on ‘high’, and then off to the races again.

VR is indeed a deep rabbit hole…

That’s why I want more light sims with VR. Graphics that doesn’t cook your PC.
