New Rig for 2025

The RAM I got, which are the only hardware I’ve got for my new PC  are DDR5 CL30 6000Mhz. That’s the lowest CL I could find in my shop.
The DDR4 RAM of my current PC is CL16 3200Mhz. So, low CL was probably more important for DDR4 RAM…?

RAM latency is in the 10 nanosecond range.

But the clock speed increases every generation. And with it the bandwidth.

So the higher the clock is, the more clock cycles are required to wait for the 10 ns to pass.

The evolution of latency across DDR generations:

  • DDR1 (400 MHz): 12.5 ns
  • DDR2 (800 MHz): 12.5 ns
  • DDR3 (1600 MHz): 11.25 ns
  • DDR4 (3200 MHz): 9.375 ns
  • DDR5 (6400 MHz): 10.0 ns

Compared to the CAS latency of each DDR generation:

  • DDR1: CAS latency around 2.5
  • DDR2: CAS latency around 5
  • DDR3: CAS latency around 9
  • DDR4: CAS latency around 15
  • DDR5: CAS latency around 32

That’s why we have cache. Gotta optimize your cache misses, boys!

[Game developer] “Optimize”? I’m unfamiliar with this term… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Just installe the 7800x3d and holy crap. Didn’t expect that much of an improvement but now I get locked full refresh rate in my Quest 2 without a single blip on the frametimes even when I do a low pass over the super carrier.

Nice!
Are you familiar with the AMD Ryzen Master software? I’m tinkering with it for my 5900X and it’s an easy way of getting good overclocks and even turning off cores that are underperforming…

Not yet. I’m still trying to navigate my way though my new motherboard because it doesn’t seem to play nicely with my RGB fans.

Mindfactory expects to have 9800X3Ds in stock on Friday. With any luck I’ll be building my new PC next week.

Another big silicon pusher here in scandinavia claims to have 9800X3D chips for sale within a week, so I put in an order there as well. I’ll just cancel the other order, if they are correct about their delivery.

But Asrock mobos seems to be hard to find around here. What brands are good options, and should I consider other chipsets than the 870E?

Mhhh you could look into B650 boards or X670E boards as well but at least in Germany I find the B650 boards surprisingly expensive. Despite their bad reputation in recent years ASUS boards are actually really good if you want to make sure your RAM can hit the advertised EXPO speed (although hitting 6000MT/s with two sticks of RAM seems to be no problem with any decent AM5 board.

If you look at other X870E boards make sure they don’t come with two PCIe 5.0 NVMe slots or only use one of them when building the PC as using both of them cuts your x16 PCIe slot down to a x8 slot. I really don’t understand why board manufacturers are doing this. The Ryzen 9000 CPUs simply don’t have enough PCIe lanes for it…

My last two mobos have been ASUS and I don’t think I have any problems with them. What has been the issue with them?

Mostly bad customer support when there are issues. Not really a problem in Europe though as the ■■■■ they are pulling simply doesn’t fly here and in the EU you simply do the return through the retailer if it’s within the 2 year warranty period.

It is the same here in Aus. For warranty issues the retailer must provide either a refund, repair or replacement within a reasonable timeframe.

Main complaint about ASUS is on Intel - they run the vCore a bit hotter than anyone else, with predictable results given the 13th and 14th gen already being run too hot for the silicon by Intel’s recommended spec…

Haven’t heard bad stories on AMD, and I still use my older ROG STRIX boards with no worries at all - so if you don’t need their US customer support they’re probably fine?

But just further on the X870E thing, are you installing addons cards like 10Gbps networking? Or multi-input graphics capture cards? Or do you plan to use the board with multiple GPUs in a hypervisor in the future?

If no to all of that, I’d gently suggest saving some money with a B650 or basic X870 (no “E”) if you can find one that otherwise fits your needs? For example, the Asrock X870 Riptide is half the price of the cheapest ASUS X870E I can find (near where I live at least) and still has PCIe 5.0 nvme and a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for the GPU. I find Asrock to be a reliable brand, though of course if you can’t find one that’s a non-starter…

CPU arrived and I updated the BIOS on the Taichi to the newest version (mine was 3.08, the version before X3D support was added).

I will now fly a sortie on the PO Server and then build the system

I’m gonna turn the old PC off now because I need a monitor and M&KB Hopefully I’ll be back on the new rig soon.
