NVIDIA RTX 3000 series

Finally got my new computer setup. Pretty much the only new things are the actual computer itself and the wireless mouse.

More or less happy with it so far. The build was pretty uneventful. It turned on and worked the first time. My general method is plan, plan more and then check what you planned and then build.

I dont know if anybody has experienced it, but my computer makes a clicking kind of sound. I looked up sounds for 3080 and apparently it’s coil whine. Maybe. It’s a bit irritating and sucks that I have to deal with it for a few years.

You doubly sure no wiring/cables aren’t brushing any of the fans? Coil whine is more whiney than clickey.

My 2070 makes both coil whine sounds (which are like a high squeal) and clicking.
I finally opened the side one day and caught what it was doing as the sound happened–the fans.

They do not spin continuously. They will stop at low power states, but sometimes they don’t stay that way. They will spin up for like half a second and then stop. Then do it again. This makes an almost HDD-like sound when it happens. I had thought it was my old WD HDD when I first was hearing it, replaced it with an SSD…and kept hearing it!

So it seems to be a weakness in the nvidia BIOS where the fans will cut in and out quickly sometimes.
I am guessing your 3080 does something similar.

You can control the fans yourself using this? I have mine set on a nice average delay curve so they don’t hit 100% unless Satan himself has come to town. :smiling_imp:

What a world!

I await the Ocean’s 3080 movie. :movie_camera:

Mining is a great way to make illicit gains from this robbery, without having to fence stuff.

Bummer…My RTX 3090 went “Ka-Poot” on me this week …after only 8months of use…returning for RMA to EVGA.

…but interestingly…my friend who has a 3090 borrowed me his older 2080ti and I’m not seeing much of a difference in performance in DCS between the two cards :eyes:…not sure if DCS has gotten a code optimization as of late??..I’m actually quite happy with The 2080ti

RTX20 to RTX30 was mainly Tensor Cores, which DCS does not use.,

Unless you VR, it’s probably CPU bound anyway…

Yeah the comments from “Wags” about doing stuff for VR have me hopeful. Just a matter of when however.

Yes.I do use and like VR so I bought the 3090 mainly for VRAM.

:eyes: :eyes: Interesting…3080ti Mining Proof??

Good chart of mining profitability and power draw for different GPUs.

Those profitability charts are interesting, in that it sort of assumes the spot price is stable, when they have never been.

The gamble on all things coins is the speculation around the price and holding. If ETH halves in 6 months you’d just have a hot room and not much money, but if it triples then the GPU pays for itself in 3 months. Some take the ETH/$7 per GPU and then convert it to more volatile coins (Flux/raven et etc), with a better chance of huge growth. Some newer things like Raptoreum mine on the CPU as well. It’s all a crazy subculture is what I’m trying to say

Yes, but it seems that with BTC’s average of 171% annual appreciation over the last 10 years, vs the S&P’s average 14%, which happens to be the world wide inflation rate for all fiat currency, one would only need 1 to 2% of your portfolio in Bitcoin to hedge against that inflation. Just an opinion from a non financial advisor.

The past is easier to math for than the future, that’s for sure

For sure. Maybe I’m over-compensating for my past poor performance , especially with retirement on the doorstep. There are enough bright people diversifying with crypto that I’m cautiously sipping the BTC Kool-Aid.

Anyway, if one could find a 8080ti for what the YT dude says is $1400, probably worth jumping on if you have a 1000 or lite 2000 card. I’m not seeing them available for near that.

In other news, I think that I killed my 3080 today. It has been shutting down randomly that last few days. And while I was trying figure out how to best use OBS to record DCS in VR today, it just stopped outputting video. I could get to Windows with AnyDesk, but in device manager it was gone. I’m going to try it in another PC. I’m not optimistic.

:frowning: Which brand?

EVGA
