NVIDIA RTX 3000 series

As always I guess for most people who have the equivalent card of the previous generation the jump will probably not be worth the price (except for VR maybe) but for everyone who is still on a 9xx or 10xx it is worth it.

I am sitting here with my 2070S saying “nope” for now. I am usually happy with dialing down quality and waiting for two generations to pass.

I hope AMD also makes a jump in quality this year so we have a meaningful choice.

I have been saving up for a 3xxx card or a 2080TI, depending on the pricetag on the 30 series. But I guess it also depends on the whole Covid19 situation if I can justify spending that much money on a luxury item
We’ll see. Will be nice to see some tests…

If I had a nickle for every time I hear that prior to a Nvidia release, I would have a lot of nickles! Every card is the “Ultimate Card to Crush all cards”. Game optimizing in 2019 did more for performance then anything. I got a 2080ti. Im good for another 100,000 miles or two more years. Witchever comes first.

Yeah the 20x release was nothing but disappointing performance wise. I hope they make good on that with the 30x.

Lol, yep, my 1st car was $2800

Funny you put it like that.

One of the reasons I can afford a card costing that much is that I can’t justify paying that much…so I don’t. For anything. Instead, I always buy the cheaper versions of things, and my bank account reflects it.

Last nvidia card I bought that was an xx80 was the 8800 I think?? It’s been all xx70 since…well I definitely recall the 970, but before that…was there a 770? Whatever I can get for $400-$500, although I think I got my 1070 for $380, actually.

Yup, they just keep throwing out the bait and we [most of us] just take it. You’d think the days of “Why optimize the software, a faster CPU/GPU will be out tomorrow…” were reaching an end (it is slowing). But, Nooooo. I half expect a V-card a few years from now will come with a CPU and harddrives

We’ll call it a Direct Long-term Cache or “DLC”.
You’re already used to paying extra that way!

My R295x2 is getting a bit long in the tooth…

I’m keeping a close eye on these prices as I have a plan to give the guts of my pc to my wife (she only plays skyrim, fallout 76 and the outer worlds) that will be more than adequate for her for a good few years to come.

Then its new MB, graphics card, ram and processor for dcs. My 4790k is about as tired as my graphics card. They have both done wonderfully for me over the years but the 3080 is calling me.

My build broken down over the 5 or so years has cost me less than £250 a year and as i almost exclusively play DCS now I think its time to boost my rig when the price of these cards settle

If it were not for raytracing, I would agree. However, that is definitely a game-changer that requires a lot more computing power to be done correctly.

What is being done now looks better, but is still done via tricks and sleight of hand to keep the real time performance decent. Reversing the rays, limiting the lines per pixel, etc. The end goal is movie-quality CG done at 30+ fps, instead of hours per frame, and there is still a long road ahead to get there, even at the price of a used car.

Agree with everything you say, but wish they’d spend more time with ‘game play’, AI for starters, as I find the graphics acceptable, and then some. Or design sims with more choice, maybe, two paths: 1) visuals to the nth-degree, or, 2) a ‘deep’ simulation - with pretty darn good visuals, still. Doubting it will ever happen.

Holy moly! Check out the size of the rumored 3090 compared with a 2080!!! …

Top …

Bottom …

I think I have the space!

and three slots from the look of the end plate!
I think I have room as well in my case. (no pun intended)

Looking at my PC…I think I have room for that.

I’ll be sitting on my 2080Ti at least until the reviews come in. If the 3090 is a huge improvement then I might pull the trigger. I figure I can still get a reasonable amount for my current card, which would help to offset the cost.

Oh ya. I personally have a 1080Ti which I really like but I would LOVE a 2080Ti right now.

I just checked kijiji in my local market and 2080Ti’s are selling for $1500 Canadian used!

I’ll be hoping to get $600 to $700 for my 1080Ti.

That’s ridiculous - the new prices are around there if not only slightly more and for another $100-200 I would not mind spending that to ensure I have a new unit in working order with warranty!

lol that’s stupid. gpu costs are effed up.

If any of you are looking to get rid of your 2080ti to make room for a 3000 series card, I may know a guy who can take it off your hands.

(It’s me. I’m that guy.) :raising_hand_man:

That’s probably going to be twice the power i want to budget for a GPU.
