Official 9th Annual Mudspike Christmas Flight 2023 - Discussion and AAR Thread

Screw Pooh, go for the Vulcan!

Hmmm. I had intended to have finished my first leg YCOM → YBAF this afternoon but RL intruded.

Because I haven’t actually departed yet but still have the Vulcan ‘ready’ with a flightplan from Canberra to RAAF Amberley, what should I do:

  • Fly the Vulcan (I’ll probably crash or get lost… a lot!)
  • Fly the Cirrus

Pressing on as the time flies. I got a feeling I would not make it on time (again!).

Anyway… Baku in Azerbaijan to Ashgabat in Turkmenistan in comfort of a CJ4.

All in cockpit ready. Not exactly by the book but there is no one to complain so off we go.

Towards the east over the Caspian Sea.

Turkmenistan. It looks like the rather uninhabited areas of land are great for building straight roads.

For some reason, the ATC liked me to cruise at FL110. Fortunately efficiency is never a problem in a sim so I

looked on the bright side of life

and enjoyed the vistas.

This airport here is Turkmenbashi International, constructed in 1950s to host Soviet interceptors - first Su-9s and then MiG-23s. Today it serves the nearby city of Turkmenbashy with some 70k inhabitants.

Some interesting (read: “non-European”) landscape. Mind that the ATC did not bother to increase my cruise altitude in the face of this mountain range :grimacing: I made it and have not even scratched the paint on the belly.

Asghabat - my destination - is down below in the soup. Good. Fortunately unlike the last time the ATC is talking to me.

When the aural warning of 500ft resonated through the cockpit, I was starring at this:

Good moment to disconnect the autopilot and hand-fly the CJ4 right onto the numbers.

Actually a little behind the numbers.

Either the supplier of the fingers is ahead of the schedule or the constructor of the terminal building is terribly late

Don’t you hate that!

Nice AAR and good job getting there!

I am sitting in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan.
And this is how it happened.

Initially I was looking at the CJ4 but then settled on a Cessna Longitude which, similarly to the CJ4, received some avionics updates.

The cockpit looked reassuringly familiar to me. Until the moment I switched on the batteries. The G3000 suite got a significant update indeed and the complexity of the systems deepend quite a bit. Great to see some love for the premium MSFS content :+1:

Pitty the checklist did not get the same amount of love, though. At the length of two pages it was OK to get the engines started and rest was on me. Cool. For some reason, an invisible lady started to yell “No take off!” at me whenever I increased the throttle. As if I wanted to take off from the apron  Jokes aside, I had no idea what was wrong… You can see on the screenshot above that there were some annunciators displayed on the PFD. The problematic one was the “No standby data” one. No idea what it was.

Until I glanced on the MFD and brought the elevator trim within the green band :+1:

The following screen is a testimony to the imperfect live weather implementation of the MSFS. Ashgabat was IFR. Though the IMC was depicted as a bubble around the airport. Few minutes later I was out in the clear with severe VMC all around.

So what, over the years I stopped to bother with such things in the sims and learned to enjoy what we’ve got instead. And there is lot to like nowadays!

On my way towards Dushanbe in Tajikistan.

Dushanbe has an ILS aprroach only to rwy 09. So when the ATC assigned a non-precision approach to rwy 27, I did not take long to ask the ATC for rwy 09 instead. They issued the clearance and sent me immediately down to the valley to intercept the ILS signal. Here I am dropping like a rock.

After a while I realized that with such a speed I would put a whole new meaning to “hot & high” arrival and pulled the speed brake. It worked like a charm. Only I sweat a bit when I found myself on the back of the power curve when established with flaps and gear down. My heart beat went back to normal when the same lady who yelled “No take off” at me earlier yelled “Speed brake!”. Thank you! I love you!

Dushanbe in IMC.

Down on the tarmac I joined the company of bigger brothers. The Longitude will stay here. For the next leg to Bagram in Afghanistan I am going to take a different bird…

Stay tuned.

Thanks. Good eye for detail.

I think I will stick with it till the end of this flight. Never really paid attention to such things but the default immatriculation sticks out.

Let me translate that for folks. That’s a fancy french word for “registration”, as one uses.

visitooors!

leaving Moosonee, low overcast

leaving the meteo radar coverage too

avoiding ‘visible moisture’

first visit was ᐙᔅᑳᐦᐄᑲᓂᔥ / Wâskâhîkaniš / Waskaganish (means Little House)

next was Eastmain River, and we were already in land of ice and snow.
there were few long roads down there in the woods and really dont know how it looks like in the winter @Fuzzy  probably just huskies pulling the sleds

and our destination for this leg ᐐᒥᓂᒌ / Wîminicî / Wemindji

same here. I looked around for something faster too.

this Bronco sounded initially like step in the right direction (that visibility from cockpit), unfortunately no gain in cruise speed over the Beech 350

from here it was only one direction. jets.

needed something with big enough tanks to carry all the eggnog all the way. and this little bird seemed to fit the bill with cruise over 300kt

great view also, no doubt

ready for the ‘brake’, ᒋᓵᓰᐲ / Cisâsîpî / Chisasibi

really nice little bella, especially as she is free (from flighsim.to oc) !

Oh, I love that you’re using the tweet! I’m gonna have to break mine out when I get to the continent.

So… where’s the Vulcan? :grinning:

Today’s AAR is my final leg in Alaska.

Picking up where I left off at PADU, we’ve got the ground power hooked up and are doing our best to stay warm in the howling wind.

I suppose this is the “silver lining” we always hear about.

It’s gonna be another gusty arrival.

… with a slight crosswind.

Shut down at PADK, the next flight will be a longer leg down to Japan in the 737.

Sorry guys. RL has been kicking my arse at the moment - I have had a couple of big tasks to take care of and very little time for anything on the PC that wasn’t related (e.g. ordering vehicle parts).

It seems like the tribe has spoken… Vulcan it is.

At least I will be able to do the trip in less legs than the Cirrus. I will endeavour to have an AAR up in the next few days.

that Tweet is absolutely great considering its freeware. plus both A-37 and T-37 are available.

your flight in F-19 inspired me to take it out of my virtual hangar for a spin after really long time. see the other XP thread.

Oh that tweet is a sweetheart. It was my daily ride there for about a month after I first got it. Life got… messy… for a few months this year and I had forgotten about her. So, thank you for inspiring me to take her for a lap. It was cathartic.

Lovely shot! The Tweety might just be the cutest little jet ever

Thank you. I agree.

Time for another short hop in the C-17 mod, this time from Frankfurt to Prague, visiting my friends at BISim over there and picking up some Czech brew on the way.

The weather in Frankfurt is challenging, hope I will have better luck on arrival.

But with the powerful engines the first cloud layer with the rain is soon below us.
I’m using now the FTLTS (or so) injector for traffic, it’s a busy day it seems!

Enjoying the belly view of the C-17.

Chasing those magenta lines.

Everything in good order, it seems.

There is a tablet integrated in the cockpit. Now if I knew how to operate it properly…

I’m happy for some breaks in the cloud layer upon approach and no rain!

Passing the outskirts of Prague.

Next challenge, how do I disable those objectives pop-ups…

A bit of a bumpy landing and I forgot to point the lights forward before landing. Otherwise I managed to follow the traffic pattern and the virutal ATC did not get a heart attack - which has probably happened on other landings by me

Cheers,
TeTeT

It’s under the Pilot Assistance IIRC. The latest update reset pretty much all my general settings to Easy and I had to go back in and turn a bunch of things off.
