OT: Mid life pet name change?

Has anyone ever attempted this? I don’t think my “rescue” cat has ever liked his current name! I call him Scooter now and he seems to like it. :slightly_smiling_face:

Have you asked him his opinion on the matter? :pouting_cat:

He doesn’t care what you call him. All cats have a name that is unpronounceable to humans and they wouldn’t tell us what it is anyway.

If you are looking for a response from him to change, try different kitty litter. You will definitely get a measurable response from him. Ask me how I know.

Brother had a dog that was named Murphey when he got him.

This became Murph.

This became Murph Dog.

This became Murph D.

This became Murph Diesel (because he had energy).

That branched into Diesel, Diggity Diesel, Murph Diggity Dog, Dufuss, and depending on his mood, asshole.

I read somewhere that a dog can learn up to 150 words in whatever language you speak to them. I liked to joke that by the time I was stuck taking care of him, at least a third of that was just his name.

I miss that dog.

Our cats received official names when we adopted them and earned 1-2 nicknames until now.

We use to call their official names whenever we feed them in the hope that they will come when we call them. I’m sure they laughing hard about this ridiculous attempt.

Did not try both my cats responded to their names though. Didn’t necessarily come but they reacted to their name.

My cat definitely reacts to her names. We use at least three names and she clearly reacts to them. Of course sometimes she ignores us but she usually comes when we call her since she knows that means getting food or something.

Changing a name will work, they usually can tell that the message was for them by other factors such as how your voice sounds. Most people use a higher pitch when talking to cats.

I have two cats that are named after the respective locations where we found them: Maxton (found in Laurinburg/Maxton, NC) and Saluda (found in Saluda, NC). I can’t wait to travel to Phuket… :smile_cat:
