P-47 Thunderbolt

Harder than the Spitfire? :grimacing:

Alright, I put it off longer than I usually would. Channel map and Jug downloading now. :sunglasses:

It is a different beast, keeping it slow enough to land is the difficulty. I have managed 2 successfull landings out of 8 so far. Bet youā€™ll like it though :+1:

So far. For me itā€™s the flare. It seems like the 3-point angle of the Jug is shallower than most of the other warbirds. I keep flaring too early and plopping down on the runway.

I donā€™t know what you guys are talking about. I find the Jug to be one of the easiest to land of all the DCS Warbirds.

If I had to rank the fighters by how difficult they are to land I would put the Jug right along with the P-51D as the two easiest to land.

Hardest to easiest:
Spitfire
Bf109
FW190 variants
P-47D/P-51D

Overall I think that it is the most beginner friendly warbird we have in DCS. It certainly is the easiest to take off in.

I just did my first few flightsā€¦ Itā€™s a fun airplane to fly. It might be my control setup, but to me she seems a little light in the nose. I didnā€™t find landing in VR particularly difficultā€¦ I bounced on a couple of landings, but the airplane settles onto the runway quite nicely if you get it right. I havenā€™t seen any tendency to ground loop. I havenā€™t read the manual yet, but I suspect I am carrying more than the recommended speed as I come in over the fence, so I can fish for a smooth landing at the expense of using up extra runway. Not a problem at Manston though  .

The Channel map looks nice. A step up from Normandy I think.

In the phil style YouTube review, Wags comments about the nose wobble. Iā€™ve added a curve on my yaw axis, which helped a lot.

Great video, thanks Phil. I really enjoyed that. I had a word with Nick about the nose wobble (TFC owned Snafu for a number of years), and he pointed out that directional stability of the Jug at low speeds and the Oswald rudders, requires a bit of curve / small tuning. Itā€™s realistic, but given the small movement of most gamer rudder pedals, it can lead to over-sensitivity. Thanks

Iā€™ll give that a try, but my main observation was refering to the pitch axis. It feels like the CoG is maybe a little far aft. I have not flown a real P47 though, so I am probably way off the mark there.

The I-16 lives at the top for me.

I completely forgot about that. I wanted to try it during the free period but never got around to it.

Same here. Iā€™m sure with the resources that the Fighter Collection has, it will get sorted out, if needed.

Hey fellas,
Open up the Quick start mission on the Jug in mission builder. You will see each of them can be a patrol. There are enough components in the air to go across the channel and get in trouble. For instance, the landing practice mission, the cold start, This is a real progress in the part of ED. The only thing I suggest is to add a wingman to these missions. Still I wish there was a German WW2 locomotive. The Jug without locomotive is like the 262 in il2 without B-17s.

Soā€¦ back to the Jug. Iā€™ve been flying it every day for a week now Starting it is no big deal but itā€™s got everything. Taxi lights, recognition lights and a fussy landing light. The Jug tax is like no other. After a few waltzes youā€™ll get the hang on the tail wheel. I keep it handy on my paddle switch. Then there is that glorious takeoff. BE ADVISED, When you get a cold and dark Jug, the trim is set for takeoff. You must really ensure the rudder trim is right. I wish DCS trim indicators were better marked like the BOS Jug (hint hint, ED). Once you get up to speed a foot full of right rudder and let up as you lift. Once in the air, trim is a full time job. She Bobā€™s, she weaves, shes unruly. Put your head down for a few too many seconds and you will not like what you see next. The Jug demands constant and undevided attention. The engine must be cared for from takeoff to parking. Them heads get hot quick!!! Combat is pushing the engine to the limits while keeping an eye on temps, one on Revs and Manifold pressure and a third eye on speed. I found myself multitasking while pulling the triggerā€¦ Cheeze and Quackers!!! You can extend out of a fight like nobodyā€™s buisness. You can stand it on a wing a turn so sharp. Love thy wing. Thank you Mr. Seversky!!! God helps anything that catches the wrath of the twin quartet of half inch guns. Heck, one wing is the armament of an early Mustang or Wilcat!
Landing is a labor of love and patience. For people like me who used to rush the landing or skip the pattern this is a reality check. Do the pattern and be patient. Keep all three eyes on your instruments and practice a lot,
Speaking of practice, the mission set that shipped with the Jug are some of the best I seen.
Spend a few minutes in ME and they can be made into anything you desire. Even the cold start can be a patrol. Kudos ED!!!
The Jug is not for everyone. If you like learning and being challenged, this is for You my friend. Learning the Jug has been soooo rewarding. Itā€™s not perfect. Against 109s and 190 itā€™s very challenging. But the rewards are really good. A kill is hard earned in a dogfight. There is one thing that ED nailed most of all, It has Character!
I was skeptical at first, but now Iā€™m convinced ED got it right. So make sure this week you give your Jugs some Love.

Question for the Americans
Did the P47 see service in the Mediterranean and where did they fly from. I used to love the desert scenarios in il21946, and I think I will do some missions with the gulf map.
Just wondering if they actually saw service in the desert
