There is mention of the 350th and 325th FG flying them for a very short while out of Tunisia, but then moved to Italy. Corsica for sure, but don’t think that they operated as far south as North Africa.
It saw service over Italy, but by the time it arrived in the MTO, North Africa was a done deal. Roughly mid-1943 and onward, replacing some P-40s in theater.
If you think about the American involvement in Europe, pretty much the war started in '42. 1942 was a mobilization year. P-40, and P-39s were first to arrive and hold the line. Lighting’s, Thunderbolts and Mustangs are 1943 planes for the most part. The Apache dont count. (Early Mustang). So the Jug is late to the party and as was said, North African is over. Italy is an interesting party. But do remember the early Jugs are all Razorbacks. The Bubble tops are more of a 1944 thing. So now you’re talking nothen Europe and the Pacific.
With poetic license I think El Alamein can be transported forward 2 years so the P47 can be part of the destruction of Rommels Afrika Corp as they fled across the desert.
I wonder when DCS WWII assets pack will include the stuka
My favourite prey of the era
I’d vote for flyable, hard to have a channel map without 'em either way imo.
I’m two weeks into the Jug. I fly it exclusively when not working on my Revell Jug.
I’ve taken damage that is frightening. Other aircraft would have left me walking or a POW. But in the Jug you not only live, but you continue to fight. My ailerons are shaking and stick jumping all over the place. I’ve got 30mm shell holes on my wings and I’m still in the fight. Once I finished a 109 w my only the guns on the right wing!!!
Shes a scary machine!!! You need to dive vertically to keep up w the opposition. You got air brakes to nail u out if you over do it. Make no mistake, you are working in this bird. You land it like a sack of potatoes and you can almost hear the grouncrews cringe and curse you. I’ve made the scariest landing ever in the Jug and still I walk away.
The speed advantage is there. It’s an asset I must learn to explore. You can fight but dont get cought up in tight little fights. You’ll be toast if you do.
Early access is missing some damage modeling and i dont think the engine can be roasted yet. It’s made aweful noises but has never packed up from over heating. I hope to get rockets soon too. It’s not complete but it definitely entertaining.
At this point i am really happy to have added the Jug to my stable.
I love it too. The only thing keeping me grounded is the heat and humidity which makes the rift a facial sauna ![]()
I have had my propeller and cowling shot off by the uber1337 JU88 and also killed outright several times with my finger curled around the trigger. Suddenly you die and go into f2 view watching your mortally injured plane still pouring our streams of. 50 cal ![]()
I’m still trying to come to terms w the temps. The engine head temps are high unless you open the cowl. Might have to do with intercooler… must investigate.
There is a bug with that currently, you can’t get the temp in check without full open cowl.
I dont fully open the cowl. It goes down pretty quick when I open it halfway. Of course it decreases when driving and increases while climbing. The best part is that I dont have to constantly work it in a fight. Hope they patch it soon. What a module!
This is my third Thunderbolting week. I had some performance issues w VR. This gave me an opportunity to refly the Jug on the Channel map over and over. This is how I test. A huge thanks to @BeachAV8R and @jross for helping me figure out my VR problem. See here: Topics tagged wmr
The mission is just a short DF against A8s. At first the Jug felt like cannon fodder to me. Last night the light came on and suddenly the Juggernaut is a Wolf in Wolves clothing. Keep it fast and you can keep up with anything. Maintain some altitude as insurance because pushing the nose down can get you out of trouble in a hurry.
On the DCS Downloads I picked up the clear prop mod. This gave me a boost in performance and made aiming a bit easier. Speaking of aiming. I found that turning off the fixed sight and making the gyro sight big as possible made my aim a lot easier. I simply range the sight depending on the situation.
The biggest difference is learning to abuse the 2800 without blowing it up. I will say that she can Zoom climb like nothing I’ve ever flown before w a Propeller. Its Amazing!
Next few days I will try to conquer that pesky K4.
Regards,
Maico
Run the wingspan at 35ft for fighters and range at 900. When the wings fit in the circle, things start disintegrating ahead of you. Adjust range as needed for the situation - again, wings inside circle.
That’s my general rule and works with the P-51 as well. Good hunting!
Elementary my dear Watson. Wingspan set and sight set to minimal range. That’s how I roll. I’m usually very close when I Squeeze. If an opportunity arises for a further shot, I got plenty of time to adjust the lead calculating optical sight. Its adjusted by the Coolie Sw on my TW.
That’s rule nr1 in aerial gunnery: when you think you are close, get closer.
When you can see the whites in his eyes (or aircraft markings) and smell his fear, that’s when you let RIP.
Well said Mr Hartman
Does anyone know if the water pressure gauge works? I use WEP all the time. I’ve never seen it move.
Not implemented yet afaik
I don’t think WEP is enabled yet I should say
Thank you @Cib.
Depends on what you are trying to achieve. See sometimes I like to see just how far away I can unload and still get hits. So much satisfaction seeing that cloud of ordnance lackadaisically merge with that tiny speck in the sky and the hits to register. I’m telling you, I get super good at that and I’ll be UNSTOPPABLE. Strangely, after 20+ years of practice, I still haven’t achieved any consistency. It’s almost like the bullets spread too much.
Nah, just need more practice.
