Persian Gulf for DCS World (formally known as Straits of Hormuz)

Definitely a lot more nice “scenery” than I was expecting. The terrain is surprisingly diverse. I still like NTTR because of its realistic training value, but really glad to have a legitimate combat theatre outside of Georgia.

buzzing Dubai is great fun in something fast and nimble.

Indeed!
Great sense of speed in the engine now.

I finally had my first day off, post PG release…
Updated DCS and installed the prepurchased (of course) PG map. Jumped in my L-39C and flew across the UAE, from Al Fujayrah to Dubai…
What a fantastic map! What great times to be a flightsimmer!
The water…is beyond words! It actually looks like it’s 3D with a seabed beneath the surface. There seems to be some sort of parallax effect that creates depth.
@NineLine, do you have any info on how they did this?
The waves are to die for, or from, if you fly low enough. I was skimming the sea, towards a tanker, and a wave swelled up in front of me. It looked absolutely super!
I don’t remember seeing this in the new Caucasus…

I also must commend the graphics engine of DCS. As I fly VR, I must reduce some settings. Because of this I have visibility set to medium. The way the objects sort of grow into view as I approach them, is pure genious! No terrain or objects popping into view.

And how about ’em objects!
From the huuuge city of Dubai, to the rural areas, there are so many detailed objects. One would think a desert region would be boring in a flightsim. Not at all!

Oh! Yes… I had to try the water droplets.
I just sat in my cold and dark F-5, watching the gloomy light of the stormclouds raining on my canopy. The sound is so soothing! In VR, this is an experience all by itself… Didn’t steal much resources, from what I could tell.

Now, what about the other settings, motion blur and SSAA… What does it do?

All, in all, the new PG receives the Trolls approval!

pretty sure it actually is, I booped a harrier into the water close to a runway and it sat there when I could see the seafloor from the camera. looks 3d!

Motion Blur blurs anything in motion relative to the camera.

SSAA is SuperSampling AntiAliasing, if you Monitor is above 1080P, do not use it.

Yeah…it’s kinda nifty and adds a bit of a Barbara Walters filter softening effect to the motion. Not sure what it costs in CPU/GPU…

It wasn’t too long ago that I “discovered” ARMA years after most everyone else. And also like most everyone else I thought, “why can’t DCS look like this!” Well now it does.

I just spent some time hovering around a mosque at Khasab. The detail is unreal. when you get just feet away from the mosaics they actually look glued onto the subsurface. How many times must one say, “wow!”?

I wonder if motion blur would be useful in VR, or if it would just mess with ASW and cause judders. Guess I will hve to try it.

Did try the SSAA in VR. That caused some wierd effect similar to pushing my nose up against the screen

SSAA Super Samples the Image, and the GFX Card VPU Rescales at the end, since VR Mode Bypasses VPU in the pipeline and sends data to the VR Compositor, it doesnt get scaled down to fit the VR Screen.

SSAA is basically for 1080P, anything else isnt worth it.

4K would Run 8K and no GPU has the Frame buffer for it.
Eyefinity/Surround would make the internal resolution above the DirectX11 D3D Horizontal Limit of 8000 px.
VR would over sample image in the HMD.

Yeah, this is known, and future patches should disable SSAA in VR.

Last night I finally managed some stick time too in the PG and I’m absolutely amazed.
Flown Multiplayer for nearly 2 hours and had minimal issues (basically just a shot of lag when a player died or connected).

Well if we don’t count me having to re-learn how to properly fly the Huey, as the hotter map makes for the new engine regime even more draconian.

Took the 'hawg after that and it awas truly magnificent.
Can’t wait to properly mission around in the PG…

Which server where you on ?

Eh… something German somthing somthing Aerobatics only. Basically a free flight-stirctly no weapons server I usually fly in to just try out MP performance and settings.
Plus the flight part.

Last night there were several (four maybe) but only one with Persian Gulf.

I’ve been flying the PG map since release and I think this is easily the best map ever made by ED. The terrain mesh, coastlines, textures…everything is gorgeous. I really love the Iranian side of the map.

We need more local assests added though. Is there published list somewhere of what is planned? I’m hoping we don’t have to wait for full release of the F-4 module to get an updated AI Iranian F-4. Also need Iranian AAA assets and I’d love to see an updated AI model for F-16 with UAE and Oman skins. Need this to bring the map to life.

Amen brother! IRIAF phantoms should be something we could theoretically sort ourselves, right?

qualified yes. You can add them to Iran’s country unit list, but I’m pretty sure that’d break integrity check. Skins should be alright.

The problem is the F-4 model is old and it’s pretty bad. I’d be happy if someone did an IRIAF skin for it though to hold us over. The AI F-16 model is better. Maybe someone will do some local skins for us. Those are the most common fighters in the region so really need this.
