“In order to save the city we had to destroy the city.”
I can’t stop comparing it with the relatively similar Strike Commender gif
Never to forget where we come from…
I never had enough of a computer to run that back in the day #regrets
Loved that game back in the day…
I also missed out playing Strike Commander… I was more of a Tornado/EF2000 kind of guy back in the 90’s .
I was playing all those… was a good time for flight sims/games back then.
I honestly think it’s still great.
In reality a lot of my feelings are tainted, so to speak, by nostalgia.
And in that regard Chuck Yeager’s Air Combat and Falcon 3.0 are nowadays still the best memories I’ll ever have in flight gaming.
It was indeed, and despite what the vocal minority might say, right now is pretty amazing too. At the moment I have DCS World (with all available modules), X-Plane 11, with numerous 3rd party scenery and aircraft addons, AeroFly FS, IL2 BOS/M/K, CAP2, VTOL VR installed. I don’t think I ever had that many sims installed back in the 90’s. We have never had it so good. And don’t get me talking about VR, which is a total game changer for our hobby/pastime/addiction…
Falcon 3.0 was my highschool vice. I flew hours upon hours of that while I should have been practicing maths. Still, my most awesome flight gaming memory is a far more recent one:
I often put on some music while flying (SP). This time I was flying the Burning Steppes campaign, mission 6 (I think) while listening to Shostakovich’ 8th Symphony. As I neared the city flying beneath a heavy but broken cloud cover, the music and game meshed perfectly. The 8th is a haunting piece that is often called the ‘Stalingrad’ and it is a sad, sad piece. As it weeped, and I neared the Volga banks, the clouds broke and a lovely ray of sunshine lanced down upon the burning, ruined city. A truly moving moment.
The golden age of flightsims might have been the 90s, but we’re living the platinum one now
@schurem, you wasted that on a post. It should’ve been a very unique AAR. Pairing music with the mood of the sim is something I had never thought of doing. I’d like to see more of your writing.
And I agree with both of you. It has never been this good.
Funny, I have the original Kuwait and Israel maps just sitting off to my right on my desk
This was my all time favorite,The graphics were Amazing for the time,My inadequate PC was straining to take in all that Super Hornet Dope!!!
Im sorry, but there’s no way to catch that any better than I already had. Well except for doing it yourself. It’s not that hard to reproduce, you need:
- A music player (or youtube) and get yourself that bit of music.
- Il2 BoS and the Burning Steppes campaign.
- A VR gogglything.
- A HOTAS.
- A big ol’ PC to drive it.
- Some luck to get it all to gel.
Screenshots would not convey it. Poetry perhaps?
@Phantom88 heh fwiw did you know that was @wags’ baby?
Yes…I think it was one of the reasons I got into LOMAC Good Times
Here’s another populated part of the Map that looks fantastic for RotorHeads
I was a late adopter to PC’s and it was 2000 before I owned one. Prior to that it was megadrive and PS1.
I loved Acecombat
And for a jaunt around NTTR in a huey I listen to this
It was a complement made badly.
@smokinhole, I thought it was a very well worded compliment, and I agree with your sentiment.
Nice post @schurem, sometimes you can stumble across an unexpected moment that is pure poetry. It can be in a real world environment, and increasingly feasible in a computer generatied one too. It’s like climbing a mountain to suddenly get your first glimpse of the stunning view on the othe side, or breaking out on top of a cloud layer at sunset, or that first time you experience sitting in a DCS cockpit in VR. Flying the F5E instant action flight in the NTTR at sunset always makes my jaw drop every time when I fly it in VR…the lighting, the scenery, the cockpit… Adding classical music to that scene would be amazing.
I too could see the compliment from far away. The highest form of flattery is to ask for more.
I mentioned the game just recently in the other thread: DOSBox Nostalgia Thread - #79 by damson
Funny thing is that tomorrow it will be 25th anniversary of its release!
Still a great game.
Anyway, anyone knows if ED is planning DCS Jetman module for upcoming Persain Gulf map?
