Here are my fur babies (almost grown up now), watching birds:
Here’s our new roomate, fresh from the cat rescue place. He’s got a great disposition - relaxed, super sweet, just wants to purr and curl up.
6 months old so still has the crazies a few hours a day, but I think we really lucked out with this guy.
My kid has wanted one for years so is ecstatic (but also terrified of him, which I hadn’t really planned on). She’s alternating between adoringly looking at him while he’s sleeping and refusing to leave my side when he’s awake, lest he “jump scare” her again.
It’s been like 10 years since I’ve lived with one so still some getting used to things…
but all in all it’s nice to a have furry companion again!
Sometime this morning, a handbag must have fallen over spilling parts of its contents on the floor in our hallway… Our observant daughter noticed a severly mangled and wet piece of chewing gum wrapping in Bertils bed. There were still some chewing gum inside the paper but Bertil could’ve eaten as many as 4-5 pieces. We rushed him to the vet who started treatment immediately.
Xylitol, the most commonly used sweetener in chewing gum is highly toxic for dogs and causes hypoglycemia, coma and death, if not treated in an early stage.
He’s now at the animal clinic for treatment and we’ll know more in a while…
Fingers crossed, everybody!
Get well soon, Bertil!
Jeeza Bertil! Worrisome
No way a dog as eloquent as Bertil gets taken down by chewing gum!
Please let us know when he’s out of the woods though. We’re all thinking of you both!
Thanks guys!
Bertil is home again, a bit worse for wear, but alive.
Treatment info:
The vet gave him eye drops to make him throw up the contents of his stomach, and boy did he ever…! Up and out came pieces of chewing gum and it all reeked of mint.
They then put him on an IV fluid treatment as the xylitol will attack his liver and kidneys.
His blood sugar and liver values were on the low side of normal. We got to take him with us back home with clear instructions on how to reach the on call vet, if he should get worse.
He’s now on a tiny meal, served often diet, for the next 24h and due for a revisit to the vet and follow up blood samples on monday.
Nice! Let us know when Bertil is up for visitors
thanks
Fingers crossed for the furry little fellow
Best of luck, I’m wishing Bertil the best.
And to you too, it’s so stressful when that happens.
Last time Geta ate god-knows-how-much chocolate pie, they were not able to get it out of her, but luckily she turned out fine after a night of careful monitoring. Like Bertil, she has a dangerous taste. Hot sauce, garlic, chocolate are her favorites.
Sending as many positive vibes your way as I can.
Get well soon Bertil.
Glad he’s on the mend. Fingers crossed for him and you all
Thank God your Daughter discovered the evidence and got your beloved friend timely treatment. All The Best to your Family
Update on Bertil.
After he came home last night, he threw up a couple of times. He seems eager to eat the teaspoon portions I give him every other hour but he refuses to drink water. I have tricked him by mixing water in the food, and even put a few drops of milk in his waterbowl, which made him drink a little. He vomited again this morning and I decided to call the vet, who wanted to check up on Bertils condition. And sure enough, he had signs of dehydration, so they put him on another IV and ran some blood tests. Will pick him up again in a couple of hours…
Poor little guy!
I would hope that he’s just getting rid of the last of it.
FWIW, we found diluted beef or vegetable stock was a tempting alternative to water if you really needed to get some liquid in a dog.
Hope he’s back safely with you shortly.
Bertil is back home again.
They treated him for dehydration and gave him something calm the nausea he most likely is suffering from due to the xylitol poisoning.
It seems to have helped as he is now drinking water again and was able to do a short walk, where he managed a big in the middle of the street
Now he’s resting in my lap.
Blood values were ok-ish and about the same as yesterday. Too early to tell if his liver has taken any damage though.
Great to hear that he’s up and happy again! Hoping for a good recovery to great long-term health for the little fluff ball.
May many follow!
Well, that always makes me feel better.
Now, if I could only get the neighbors to stop complaining…
Glad he’s home.
If he is eating, drinking and pooping (outside ) then things are looking up.
Bertil may not be out of the woods, but he is at least on the home stretch.
We freeze ice cubes of beef stock, makes a great summer-time treat.
