Pimax 5K+ and 8K VR

I think FOV might be one of those ‘try it to like it’ sort of things, in that once you use a cockpit in 150 FOV+ then it might be hard to go back. We’re used to 110, but there is still quite a lot of the ‘ski mask’ vibe going on.

For the controllers, I’m of the opinion that VR is splitting up (or always has been but we didn’t realize so much) into the main market segments of:

  1. Media consumption. People wanting watch VR stuff (porn, netflix, movies etc) in a passive consumption sort of way. Things like the Oculus Go, Samsung Gear, Google Daydream all good for that.

  2. VR Games. Things that require you to wave limbs around. The ‘holodeck’ like experience where immersion is helped by physically interacting with the world so much that you feel you’re there. Games have to be made from scratch for this. Hand controllers or even ideally physical playspaces where you can stand. The Oculus Quest might be really good here as a way to grow that market and find a ‘killer app’ for VR.

  3. Conversion VR Games. Things that work well on a joypad or mouse and that look neat in VR. Things like Skyrim, Fallout, Hellblade etc. It’s where AAA money can be spent on production, with a VR conversion thrown in as an experiment.

  4. Cockpit VR. Where you drive or fly and already have peripherals. ← Mudspike is here. :slight_smile:

So for me and Cockpit VR, I don’t care about the Pimax controllers, and would be fine if they didn’t really work as I’m after that delicious resolution/FOV combo and will just use my HOTAS anyway.

VTOL VR and X-Plane have done great things with the controllers, and it increases the immersion, but the ‘whales’ that will buy 2080 Tis and $700 VR headsets will already have Warthogs, pedals etc.
