Recording the DCS.exe window will still work as you’re used to - except if you use Dynamic Foveated Rendering (or whatever it’s called) in the Pimax software. Last time I looked, the OBS hook grabbed the frame before the “high res” subimage was composited on.
The two-week trial is something I’d like but I don’t know if it’s offered here in Japan. The VR market is a bit weird here…been looking for a kind of rental service but no hits so far.
I just took delivery of my Crystal Light. It is not (yet) as comfortable as my G2, but the FoV is better and the screen is a delight. I put the viper on a runway at night, and I did not up the gamma from 2 to 3 to even see the stars!
Anyway, I need to tweak it, perhaps buy a better face gasket because the default one is not very comfortable and it leaks light. I also need to get VRoptician glasses in it.
I’m deferring the decision wether to keep it for a week or so.
The box tasted of rice and shrimp.
The controllers are quite a bit better than the G2s, which I used once, then ended up in a drawer. I even played a bit of VTOL VR with them.
Good one @schurem ! LoL
First, Get a powered USB hub. It makes a world of diffrence to me with the original Pimax Crystal.
Comfort. Riding motorcycles at speed prepared me for the weight of the Pimax.
See my 3 mods.
Wheel Weights on the back. Pimax Comfort strap with a piece of foam inside. Hope the Light lives up to its name.
I only have a sample of one. The optics seem fine. More than fine tbh. Big, beautiful lenses. There’s some distortion, but how you wear the thing seems to have an impact on that too.
I don’t think I’ll be sending this unit back. I like the deep blacks and the slightly larger FoV. Sound is an issue however. The built-in speakers (which sadly are in the way of a regular over-ear headphone set) are adequate, but nothing more than that. I rather wear my beyerdynamics over the headset like I used to in my G2. I may even look into removing the built in speakers entirely.
For comfort, I ordered a package of replacement cushions and a head strap to see if that improves the thing. I may also want to get VRoptician lens inserts again, although that may have a negative impact on the FoV on this headset.
You’ve identified a big annoyance for me with most VR headsets - I can’t use my headphones with them!
I have a very specific use-case, in that I don’t listen to sound directly from the gaming PC, but it’s also a mega annoying step down from a decent set of headphones to most “built-in” solutions. I think this is one thing Windows Mixed Reality (RIP) got right…
I saw a guy who modded a helmet fitting to his VR headset. I don’t know if that actually works, but if it do, that’d be one way to solve the problem. Just have the thing be the visor of a helmet and build in good headphones as well. I’d look even more of a nerd wearing that though, especially combining such helmet with slippers and a bahtrobe XD
I couldn’t use the included headphoens of my HP Reverb (not that they were broken, I simply didn’t get them to work) so I had to engineer a way to use my proper headphones or the PC’s loudspeaker.
Interesting - I didn’t know Reverb had built in speakers!
The Lenovo Explorer I owned for many years, along with the Asus and HP (first 1440x1440 one, not the reverb) all had a TRRS port (or a cable with a TRRS socket), and the headband sat high enough you could comfortably use over-ear headphones with the headsets.
OK, just got notice there’s a package coming my way all the way from Kiwiland with some stuff to make the thing more comfortable.
I’m still knee-deep in tweaking the thing to run right. There’s a ton of settings to get right. SteamVR or standalone? Quadviews this way or that way? 90hz or 120hz? Smoothing on or off? or done by steam?
The PSVR 2 just had a large permanent price drop, and by all accounts it’s a very nice headset, but the fact it’s only PC compatible via a hardware dongle, and that the ecosystem is limited, leaves me unsure if its something that’s actually interesting…
Or something to be considered in the same breath as this.
I have been playing around with the thing for a week now. While the optics are glorious, and I could see myself getting used to wearing it and using the button thing in the back, I have some problems still.
One is tracking. Often it seems to have trouble keeping track of things and then the framerate completely plummets. Pimax support on discord suggested taping over the lower two tracking cameras. This did help with the godawful framedrops, but made tracking problems not go away. Especially when I look left I need to recenter immediately, which is very annoying. Could have something to do with the featureless bit of wall I face when looking left from my pit. So I’ll try and put up a picture or something, see if that helps.
Another, more subtle and less annoying problem is that compared to my G2, the shape of things seems a little … off. The left hand side of the front panel seems a little further away than the right hand side, and looking around the pit does not entirely feel 1 on 1 with real life, making the pilot body feel very strange as well. I am not sure how to fix this.
