Polychop Simulations OH-58D News and Updates

Agreed, I watched them in whole as well. The fact they have this Barandus guy, a former Kiowa Warrior SIP, on-board for the development instills a little confidence. I’d doubt he would sign off on the module if he didn’t believe it was accurate. I always wanted to have faith in the Gazelle and it felt believable when kept within the envelope but when pushed to the edges and beyond (for which such a light scout heli lends itself well) things could feel a little unreal. I’m also happy they shoot for a full release and not an early-access period.

Hopefully this Barandus fellow will also someday share his experience on the AH-64 towards a module

My problem with the Gazelle has more to do with the lack of a vortex ring state and the odd nature of the fantail. You can crash the collective and pull it back with no issues whatsoever, and forward speed instantly removes the need to counter yaw with pedals.

I’d try that but I can never seem to get by, “You can crash” :open_mouth:

Seriously, I see what you are saying…that you should get significant torque differences that would require rudder input between the two extreme collective states? Why kind of, I assume forward, airspeed are we talking about. Can/does the tail fin compensate for most of the torque at higher speeds? Interesting.

I know that unlike most light helos it also has an stabilizer/autopilot that kicks in above a certain speed. Another possible reason if at speed? I know at lower speed, I get yaw’ed all over the sky if I’m not on the ball with the pedals.

*“With the help of the pilots we are currently evaluating details, which also includes the refinement
and corrections of the avionics system of the aircraft. During the coming weeks, we hope to inte-
grate the moving map feature to the avionics and also finetune the weapons and the flight model
of the Hellfire missiles and will integrate another rocket type, that we have not shown or talked
about yet, that will make it possible to properly engage infantry and light armoured vehicle units in
DCS World.

During the past months we have also worked on certain aspects of the flight model that either
needed corrections or refinements. For example, the torque values of forward flight at all possible
altitudes, speeds and temperatures. Currently, we are working on the hover torque requirements
to accurately mimic real aircraft as closely as possible. We are also looking at the flight character-
istics below ETL, effective translational lift.

Performance pages have recently been added to the DCS Kiowa Warrior MFD, which will enable
you to ask the system to calculate your power for certain flight envelopes in level and hover flight.
Night vision has also been added, which we plan to update prior to release with a new feature never
before seen in DCS World Helicopters, but we do not want to reveal anything yet, because we can
not yet foresee obstacles we may come across that might delay such a special night vision feature.
We are confident that on release, we will have realised the most accurate Kiowa Warrior representation
in the game market.

At the moment we have 19 US Army liveries of various Kiowa Warrior troops, these include older
aircraft markings. 16 Croatian army liveries were added as well, which is the complete fleet of the
Kiowa Warriors they operate, including the tail number 327 that crashed on the 27th of January 2020
and resulted in the unfortunate loss of the aircraft and crew. Our condolences go out to the family and
friends of the crew.

Since everyone was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, our production has slowed down a bit during
the past weeks, because we as a team were also affected. Nevertheless we are back to normal again
and our team is back to normal status because we have the desire to keep our promise for a release in
2020, which also includes the time required for the quality verification process by Bell Helicopters.
That said, we are also currently working on 3 stand-alone campaigns for the DCS Kiowa Warrior.

Finally we hope everyone stays safe and is excited for the release of DCS: Kiowa Warrior.”

I am very curious what this might be, and don’t have any guess ATM. Definitely intrigued.

I’m thinking Cappuccino Maker! Oh please, oh please, oh please. :crossed_fingers:

How about… getting out of the chopper?

Or maybe PKWS?

It is my understanding that this was posted on PolyChop’s Facebook page recently. Apparently the new update to DCS has seriously hampered development of the OH-58D. Damn. It must be so difficult to be a third party developer for a game engine which is constantly being ripped apart and rebuilt.

Due to some core engine changes in the way indicators and multi function display symbology are handled within DCS World we suffered a massive setback in both the development of the Kiowa Warrior and the Gazelle. We’re working hard to figure out what exactly is causing the issues and how to adapt.

Am I the only one who is really disappointed every Friday when The “DCS Weekend News” comes out and there is nothing…zip…nada mentioned about The Kiowa?? That I thought was far into development over a year ago.

Thank You…I missed this…
"*Dear community,

In the light of recent events, in particular the bug report document posted here, we’d like to make a statement.

We understand your concerns, the Gazelle hasn’t been supported as much as we’d have liked to for quite a while. Some bugs have been known for a long period of time but have not been addressed as of yet. Polychop has shifted it’s priorities and limited assets towards developing a new module. The idea has always been that the new module, with it’s more advanced flightmodel and other features we know you as a community would like to see, would pave the way for a number of much needed updates to the Gazelle. In hindsight we can all agree that this strategy did not work out for the best as simply too much time passed in which the Gazelle didn’t get the attention it deserves.

The Gazelle as a module has deteriorated during this period of time even though some updates were released that did not get mentioned in the changelog. Some issues have been there from the beginning while others were introduced by many of the core engine updates of DCS, which we should have adapted to. The core engine is a constant work in progress, ED has been doing a great job in enhancing it and making it an ever more feature rich environment. The code of a module heavily relies on the core engine, when certain parts of the engine code are changed it might interfere with the module. A certain synergy between Polychop and ED is needed in order to be able to adapt to any core engine changes. Communication between Polychop and ED on the matter of these code incompatibility issues could be more streamlined and we’re determined to put more effort in to that.

Your message is clear though and it made us reconsider our priorities. As stated before, our intentions were to learn from the flaws in the Gazelle and build the new module from scratch, then implement and adapt the new code for the Gazelle module. Now we will focus on finding ways to develop both the Gazelle and the new module in parallel. This means we have to expand as a company as right now Polychop has only one coder, a graphics artist and an intern. Your voice has been heard and we’re already in negotiations with a very promising coder who will focus solely on the Gazelle. With the above in mind we will try our best to bring you the updates you requested as soon as possible.

We realize that actions speak louder than words and that we will have a lot to prove and improve.
One of the things we’d like to change is the way we interact with the community. Asking of you to start with a clean slate might be too much at this point but know that our intentions are to be more receptive to your suggestions and feedback. This means items that were previously non-negotiable will now be up for discussion and possible implementation again. To set an example we will be implementing the changes to the Mistral missile.

We have a long way to go and we know this statement won’t take away your skepticism. We’ve always had the intention to bring the Gazelle to a higher level. Making us reconsider our strategy might get it there at a faster pace. We thank you for that.*

I found this on Polychop FB Page…
" Polychop-Simulations

We aim for a 2020 release but, granted, 2020 is almost over and there is a possibility we won’t make it. Yet we stand by the fact that we won’t be releasing an early access module or a module with many features missing or half done. If it takes longer to get it right, we will take our time to do just that. We want the release to be feature complete and mission ready. That is not to say we won’t be adding additional features later on.

As to where we are in the development process; We’re still working hard to adjust the flight model. All values in all situations have to be correct. This is a very tedious process, mostly crunching numbers. While this is something that can hardly be shown, it makes a world of difference when flying the Kiowa Warrior. The end of this process is in sight though and from that point on we will be working on implementing and adjusting system specific features."

I hope that people can be realistic with expectations when it comes to such a small team releasing a module. The fact of the matter is they will need the community’s work as testers in the Open Beta to get through the hundreds of man hours of gameplay and various situations to really test their work to the limit and find all the holes. If ED needs that kind of testing and feedback, any smaller team will need it even more.

OH-58D Kiowa Warrior November News

Dear community,

With the end of the year fast approaching and still a lot of work to do, we have come to a point where we have to accept that a 2020 release of the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior module is no longer feasible. We want to release a module that we feel is feature complete, mission ready and a true tribute to the men and women in army aviation. That is not to say no extra’s will be added later on. Even though we’ve been crunching the past months, we simply aren’t there yet.

We can imagine this is a disappointment to all who look forward to the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior module and we hope to make up for this with the polished release the module deserves. We’ll be working hard to get you the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior module as soon as possible.
