Post Table of Contents

Intro

A new option when writing long posts to include a navigable table of contents. Use headings in markdown format (# before a single line heading for heading1, ## for sub heading2 beneath that etc).

How to Use It

You can add a Table of Contents (TOC) in the menus like this:

But Why?

Sometimes posts can get quite long, and this encourages the use of headings. Also makes it easy to navigate to a specific part of a post using the clickable link. On desktop check out the area to the right. On mobile you’ll get a wee thing to click at the bottom if you like.

Can I?

Yes of course, although a TOC is only applicable to a new topic post, so replies don’t count.

I Don’t Really Understand

You’ve got the headings bit sorted, as in

Heading 1

Heading 2

Heading 3

# Heading 1
## Heading 2
### Heading 3

…but to be clear this feature just does a Table of Contents on the first post in a topic only - the replies have the scrollbar to navigate the posts under it, so harder to squeeze in. I guess we just have to create more new topics!

@fearlessfrog - thanks for this!

I updated my post on DCS AAA & SPAAGs with this new format, if anyone wants a sample:

That’s excellent @Wes, thanks for doing that as it’s exactly the sort of thing it works well on.
