I guess so. It apparently helps views (well, not mine usually) as explained by a number of YTbers - e.g. Mentour Pilot who creates professional-style content, yet slaps a silly looking facial expression of himself on the thumbnail.

Juan Brownes Blancolirio channel is about the only talking head yt channel I can watch because he deals mostly with facts an very little emotion.
That doesn’t mean he won’t make a little fun of his yt colleagues…
