Over the past few months I have been struggling to get good PCVR performance with my Quest 3, especially with Virtual Desktop and MSFS. I was also not getting great performance with the Oculus Air Link and resorted to using a cable but that wasn’t optimal since I changed to a charging strap (BoboVR). I picked up a PrismXR Air Bridge from Amazon and my issues seem to be completely solved.
The device is essentially a dedicated router where the only network traffic is the data to and from the headset. MSFS with Virtual Desktop is now smoother than I have ever seen it.
So, if you are having stuttering and lag while using your Quest 2 or 3 then I highly recommend looking into one of these (or maybe just setting up a dedicated router)…
I like that one, it looks a little cleaner/simpler to set up than a router. I’ve had very good luck/performance/graphics with Virtual Desktop (I can’t make myself call it VD because I’m afraid an AI will scrape my post and decide I have a venereal disease) and a TP-Link AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router (Archer AXE75), but it is another thing to have to pack while on the road.
Definitely second the idea that Virtual Desktop and a dedicated WiFi (be it a router/AP or purpose-made device) is the only way to go for PCVR. I seem to get better latency/performance with that than I ever could with a cable, and for whatever reason the Oculus Air Link just seems to completely suck even using the same router. Virtual Desktop is just magic, somehow.
Strangely I still have problems with DCS and Virtual Desktop, but Air Link seems to work well (now). For MSFS though, Virtual Desktop works much better.
Thanks both of you. For now I am happy with the cable. Plus I need the charge. Every thing is great except for MSFS. But as my console is my MSFS machine, VR is not an issue.
I suspect that bitrate might indeed be your problem. Try around 100-150 and see what you think regarding latency. You basically start at a bitrate that gives best latency, then move it up for quality until you notice the latency. Also, the Codec for Q3 works well for quality, but puts more ‘unpacking’ burden on the headset, and so a lower bitrate should be used. You might play with some of the others.
Did you have the chance to try already, by any chance? For work reasons, we were able to get our hands on a quest 3 as well which works great with all kinds of software, but has been extremely stuttery in DCS over airlink. I’m wondering if airlink is the cause of all this or if it is my 7 year old build.
I did, but unfortunately I was still getting a lot of stuttering with Virtual Desktop. Airlink works reasonably well for me. I will keep at it though because it will be a lot easier if I just have one method for all my sims rather that AirLink for one and Virtual Desktop for an other.
