Quest Kodiak

Does anyone have the Kodiak Quest? And VR too … I am wondering how it is in VR.

I have it. Love it but let me check it out in VR and report back.

OK - so I just spent a few minutes with it in VR. Not an exhaustive look, but enough to know that I really like the plane and would probably consider it for AH2XP at some point.

VR control manipulation is good. The only thing I might warn against is that the PFD and MFD G1000 symbology and bezel controls are pretty small lettering. I can read them with my Reverb, but your mileage might vary at lower resolutions. The cockpit is fast updating and efficient on FPS and is working fine as far as I can tell with Vulkan and the latest X-Plane beta.

The plane is a blast to fly. It has excellent low speed characteristics and you can drag it in over a treeline, plop it down, and add that prop reverse and stop on a dime. It feels very good in VR. Thranda also has some great menu options like changing to tundra tires on the fly, adding mud flaps, putting on skis, enabling a cargo configuration, and an on the fly livery manager. It also has a menu driven weight and balance tool which is very nice.

Couple VR shots…

Oh…and the other thing about the Thranda Kodiak - there are SOME areas of the cockpit that are not true 3D, but you barely notice it when flying. For instance, the lower center instrument panel area where the Hobbs meter is…that is a flat display, not 3D. Just a couple areas that don’t really look bad at all and those areas are sort of not used very much anyway. Figured I should mention it though…

Also - last comment on the Kodiak (maybe…LOL) is that there doesn’t appear to be a working GTN 750 mod available that I can see. The G1000 works fine, but if you were planning to put a GTN 750 in the panel…it probably won’t work unless you make a mod yourself. The 2D GTN 750 does work…as it would with all aircraft, but it won’t be panel mounted. Unless someone has come up with that mod that I am not aware of. (I think there was a mod for the Lionheart Quest Kodiak for FSX/P3D though…)

Oh…and my last, last comment about the Kodiak (not really) - I do not have the REP add-on. I’ll bet that adds a lot to the experience too.

I never tried the Quest in XP. I did get a very nice model in FSX with a lot of features. But for the life of me I just couldn’t warm up to the plane. It wasn’t that the model was bad; it was very good. Maybe the all G1000 stuff? I don’t think so since I’ve used that in other aircraft and really liked it.

When I compared it with the C206 (Carenado) I just liked the Cessna much better…which is weird since they are practically the same aircraft.

Nice info @BeachAV8R! Thanks! I have been considering getting this aircraft for a while and AH2XP may be the trigger

My concern comes from the last Carenado module I had (Bonanza for X-Plane). I kept having to put the license key in every time I tried to fly it and ended up running out of uses. I was not able to figure out what I was doing wrong so I am being a little cautious before buying another one.

I just fired it up after not having flown it for a long time and it did not ask me for a serial…and that is after several beta updates. Not saying it won’t happen…but it didn’t happen to me.

Here are the nice options menus that slide out from the left side of the screen too…

I think the REP comes with it now? Thought I read that somewhere.

Think I was confused. V2 includes a bush pack, not the REP pack.

I have it too. Flies nicely, though not that I can tell how it compares to real life. VR works great. The cockpit looks a bit dark to me due to the color. On FPS, I get about 15-20% lower compared to default XP planes. For comparison, I tried the JustFlight Turbo Arrow III demo, which is also heavy on resources because of its complex system, I suppose. This Arrow gets about the same FPS as the Kodiak. My system is i7 8700k, 1080ti, 32G.

Speaking of Kodiak in real life, just found this on Youtube. Almost feel like “Worst Place to be a pilot” V2 in a Kodiak https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-7EOwkozZI

I couldn’t help myself, and picked this one up on sale last night. I regret nothing.

It really is rather good… ;). But so is the Porter, and it can get into shorter strips. I’m not helping am I?
