Quick Viper fun (1k fuel to reach max alt to deadstick landing)

Thanks to you for coming up with the fun challenge as well  I earned that title many moons ago, guessing the amount of traffic Mudspike would receive in a certain time-frame. The reward was originally supposed to be a steam gift card but instead I asked for a copy of LotATC, hoping to use it during one of mudspikeā€™s fly-ins. Unfortunately, we donā€™t have that many of those anymore :frowning:

Cool challenge! Actually a really good one to practice the SFO pattern (minus the S)

This was a fun challenge.
If you watch any of the tracks, the third is worth watching.
First attempt:
54,296 ft ASL.
flight duration: 4:38. edit:[corrected previous entry]

It didnā€™t end very well. In my defense, this was only my second flight in the DCS Viper (though I do have pretty good experience in the BMS falcon) - and the sun was in my eyes.

2nd attempt:
56, 643 ASL.
flight duration: 5:20 edit:[corrected previous entry]

This time, I was aware of how slippery the jet was, so got a better landing.

3rd attempt:
57,694 ASL.
flight duration: 5:26 edit:[corrected previous entry]

I went into a deep stall on this one and, fortunately, the manual pitch override switch is modeled. The plot below is pretty interesting: you can see where the deep stall was entered, then a terminal velocity in the stall along with the pitch oscillations (it took me a second to realize the switch isnā€™t sticky in DCS so my synced pitch inputs werenā€™t helping at first.

edit: fixed wrong flight times

Well, shoot. And here I thought Not reading the thread before making my attempts was the thing to do so I wouldnā€™t see other folks scores and methods. Turns out I should have read it to find out that the contest was closed. :grinning:

Oh, well still a heck of a lot of fun.

Every attempt was made by going full AB and leaving it there until all the gas was gone. The parameter that I was messing with was pitch. Also, get airborn and gear up ASAP. Gentle pull (1.2 g) to desired pitch. The first two attempts I pulled all the way through the vertical. The third Attempt, as seen in the post above, approached 80*.
I didnā€™t spend any time analyzing how to approach this; my technique comes from missions where Iā€™m at low level and ready to go home Iā€™ve learned that zoom climbing to most efficient altitude usually results in the most fuel efficient ride back.
Iā€™m no pilot, but it works for my in BMS and having almost no experience with the DCS viper, I just went with that.

I think Iā€™ll go try it in BMS now.

Thanks for posting the challenge. Iā€™ll be more timely with the next.

I donā€™t think itā€™s closed. Everyone is welcome to beat high score.

Not directed at you, Goblin,
One small (very small) technique I used is reduced power take-off. Instead of going full AB, run at 90% power and right at lift off go full AB. Time will start at unstick so it savesā€¦10? seconds of fuel.

I took off 08:00:15, reached an altitude roughly 42000 feet high and was back on the ground again 08:03:15.
