RAZBAM: A7 Corsair II

…this is all my fault, isn’t it?

Yes.

For those not scoring at home -

A-7 → @Navynuke99 → McNamara → @near_blind → Cheney → F-14 → @AeroMechanical → F-18

Not sure how we skirted the F-111 in there even though the F-15 got strafed halfway through…

Really, once you get a few thousand hours on a airframe you are better of scrapping it unless you want to keep making composits and doublers to stop the cracks. Re F16 fleet got greatly helped by countries like Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark that accumulated a lot of hours early on and tested new techniques to keep them flying.

There’s nothing that could have saved that outdated brick maintenance wise.

I got busy at work and couldn’t toss out any Michelle Jenneke comments in time.

Tankerwade how would you score this thread at the half-time?

C’mon man, my entire wind up to dunking on Cheney was an F-111 post.

Yes, but I’ll let you blame Ray Maybus if it makes you feel any better.

Decided that this post had no relevance and did not honor the role played by the air crew. Withdrawn.

Ah yes, I was a young LT working in the Pentagon, fresh from a tour in VF-32 (when they still flew Tomcats). I was one of intel four officers who would rotate, providing the CNO, SENAV and other admirals with their morning intelligence brief. On our weeks not “in the barrel” briefing CNO, we would write intel articles and every now and then go to give other Navy offices a monthly intel summary brief at one one of their morning meetings.

I was scheduled to brief NAVAIR, the admiral and staff responsible for the A-12 the day after the axe fell, the program was cut, and all the NAVAIR guys that had anything to do with the A-12, “NAVAR actual” included, got fired.

So I called over to talk with the admiral’s aid:
Me -“So…yeah…um…pretty wlld day over there…um…do you still want me to come over and brief you guys tomorrow?”
Flag aid - “No…that probably won’t be necessary.”
(Understatement of the Year)

Near_Blind is off on one point. In addition to a joystick, the A-12 program also produced a cheesy artist’s conception of the finished aircraft…likely the most expensive artist’s conception artwork ever.

Since you’re probably ‘in the know’ more than anyone… I thought this story about the A-12 was kind of interesting…
