Replacement for HP Reverb G2

well if you are getting 80fps that is 12.2ms in frametime hence the stutter you are seeing. try turning down the resolution…

I’m running pimax play render resolution at “0.70”. Earlier in testing I had fps locked at 90 FPS and also a solid 11.1 ms frametime. Still was seeing the terrain stutter.

MSFS 2020 in comparision looks much smoother even at lower framerates. I’ve done all the usual DCS stuff like cleared shaders, disabled mods, and run repair/clean.

well if you are still getting stutter can you lower the HZ Rate and lower the resz a bit more. but if you are at 11.1 and the more under 11.1 is better you should not be seeing stutter.

If you still see stutter and are below 11.1 @90hz then something else is amiss…

I spent the last six days playing with the PCL and comparing it to the Reverb G2. I tested it with MSFS 2020 and DCS.

After a lot of fiddling I finally got the “90Hz Upscaled” mode to work. I had the latest nvidia driver installed but had to use DDU to remove and reinstall it. Then I had to clear the Pimax Play profile.json file and it worked after that.

90hz Upscaled did give a fps boost but I could not for the life of me get DCS smoothed out. The terrain stutter just would not go away no matter what settings or resolution I chose. 90hz Upscaled mode also reduces the clarity so it kind of defeats the purpose of the higher resolution display.

In contrast MSFS worked much better and was generally smooth gameplay even at lower framerates. Now that I think of it, many of the youtube reviewers that give the PCL high marks are bigger into MSFS. If thats your thing then maybe the PCL is a good choice for you.

Maybe a future update from ED or Pimax will smooth things out in DCS. The real deal breaker for me was the comfort. The PCL is very front heavy and didn’t conform to my face well at all. I was getting neck strain from it sagging and it would shift around my face a lot.

In the end I decided to return the PCL and keep rocking my G2. I get no issues in DCS with the G2 and it’s light and comfortable. Using quadviews I’m getting great performance also.

Thanks for that. I just want a replacement for my G2 because it has stopped working. DCS is really all I used it for. Did you try the extra strap to take the weight of the PCL or the thicker foam?
What do you mean by “quadviews”. Dont think I have come across this even though I have had my G2 since it came out.

I didn’t bother with aftermarket head straps and face pads. I know the comfort issue could be improved somewhat with that, but I just did not like the form factor and weight of the PCL at all.

Quad Views is a method of Foveated Rendering developed by Matthieu Bucchianeri. See the link below. It runs with the OpenXR runtime under SteamVR. Its a bit tricky to get setup correctly but it makes a big difference in performance for DCS and works great with G2. With quad views I’m able to get a really nice balance of performance and visual clarity now.

If you’re using OpenXR for WMR you will need to uninstall that. Make sure you follow the install steps very carefully.

I also recommend the quadviews companion app. It allows you to easily adjust the quad view settings for better performance or visuals.

Thanks. I am getting a second hand G2 as a temporary replacement. I will try both of those.

Huh, getting that quadviews thing running went far easier than I thought it would. Nice. Got a nice sweet boost in frametimes too!

I have been lurking in this thread and will try it as well. Thanks for the info @will2360

I’d basically given up on my G2… maybe I need to revisit?

What update is “killing” the G2? My new rig is fully updated so I’d prefer to avoid an issue if I try setting up the G2.

Thanks

Win 11 24H2… if you have win pro you can keep the previous version and no need to upgrade to the newer versions… you can do this with GPEDIT…

Thanks… I apparently missed this info. I knew MS was no longer doing WMR anymore in the future but I missed where they dropped it out of Win11 completely.

well microsoft said they are going to phase out WMR by 2026 so you have at least till 2025 to get new gear…

As a person driven away from WMR by Microsoft’s decision and my hardware breaking, the Quest 2 is a very nice headset - though I feel like the horizontal FOV isn’t as good as the Lenovo I used to use (edit: this is difficult to tell, since the vertical FOV is definitely better and I’m not sure if it’s just me going from a square display to a vertical rectangular display and getting confused)

The nicest thing about it is that it can be set up to be completely wireless.

And I hear the lenses and displays in the Quest 3 are even better…

Except they’ve already pulled WMR from the latest W11 24H2 update so unless you can keep off of it, then yes. This may just be the straw that breaks the camels back and I go triple screens and find someone that still wants this G2.
