Replacement for HP Reverb G2

Mine has just died. Power supply problems. Any thoughts/recommendations? I am starting to think about a Pimax Chrystal Light with Black Friday coming up.

I like my Quest 3, but I’d love to hear some comparisons with the Crystal Light.

I just ordered a Q3. Much as I don’t like you know who, what I hear about Pimax is that it can be hit or miss on ease of use.

Hey Scoop, if you aren’t determined to get a new one, PM me a good mailing address and I’ll send you mine.

well I was just looking there really is not much out there. I am guessing Pimax and Q3 is about it for me…

And the Pimax is a little on the spendy side… another damned expensive hobby I got dragged into lol!!

Pimax Crystal is expensive, yes. But compared to my first foray into 4K gaming probably ten years ago now, it’s about the same with inflation taken into account!

Of course, that 4K monitor lasted me until two years ago (when the power supply blew up), while my Micro$oft VR headset is getting EOL’d next year whether I like it or not :triumph::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Dumb question… Let’s say I give away my HP Reverb G1 and someone gitfs me a Quest 3, can I play all my old VR games as if nothing changed?

Pretty much, yes.

You might need an app like Virtual Desktop, and you will need a link cable (high speed USB-C) or to solve the finicky wireless connection Quest uses… but after that things do tend to “just work”, particularly anything that used SteamVR

anyone here hada Reverb G2 and then bought a Q3?? any comparisons? I am sort of considering a Q3 from my G2… since it does the Steam VR stuff I might go and get one but I am wondering if any improvement from a G2??

I read the Q3 uses Fresnel lenses still just not sure how good the image would be over the Reverb…

I went from a G2 to a Quest 3. Image in center of G2 sweet spot is better, but overall image in Q3 is better, IMHO.

Now that I’m used to it, I love the end to end clarity in the Q3.

I intend to go pimax but I don’t see my G2 bricked just yet. I just held off on the update that kills it. Gives time to save up.

I don’t want to side or even downgrade. Replacement of functional hardware is only justified if the stuff is obsolete imo.

With my G2 dead I intended Pimax subject to oppinions. However am being sent a replacement. So gratefull that the world is full of nice people.

Yeah, I am not planning to update windows to 24H2 anytime soon.

When I build my next rig I will also get a new VR headset but until then I will stick with my G2.

I am thinking of building a monster for DCS next year, something like: 9800X3D, 5090, 96GB DDR5, pimax headset etc. but we’ll see.

Reverb G2 owner since '21 here. I just received my PCL yesterday and have it all configured for testing. I’m running it on i9 13900K / RTX 4090.

So far my initial thoughts are:

  • WOW the resolution and clarity is amazing coming from the G2!

  • My god this thing is worst headset for comfort I’ve ever tried! It’s front heavy and pinches my cheek bones. This may be fixable with third party mods.

  • Build quality seems below average. Lower than the G2 for sure.

  • Audio is terrible. I purchased the DMAS audio upgrade but apparently its backordered and hasn’t shipped yet. It said “in stock” on their website when I purchase it.

  • The sweet spot is decent. Better than the G2 but you still have to look directly at things like cockpit gauges etc.

  • I’m having trouble getting DCS performance dialed in. Motion is smooth until I look sideways out of the cockpit and I see small stutters in the terrain. This usually results in motion sickness.

  • Configuration and setup is confusing, especially for DCS due to several changes to recent versions of both DCS and Pimax software. I had preinstalled PimaxXR and Quadviews. Later I found out I don’t need them. I also had to uninstall OpenXR since its now integrated into Pimax Play.

  • MSFS 2020 performance is better than DCS. It looked gorgeous and motion was smooth with mostly high settings. Still more testing needed here.

  • Local dimming is definitely an improvement over the G2’s terrible washed out blacks. It makes night flying a little more tolerable, but not the improvement I was hoping for.

  • I haven’t been able to test the new “90Hz Upscaled” mode because the current version of PimaxPlay is bugged and it doesn’t work.

I’m going to try and decide over the next few days whether or not to keep this thing or send it back for refund. I spend the most time in DCS so I need to figure out if I can get performance smoothed out there. Right now I’m getting a lot of motion sickness with it.

While shopping for my G2 upgrade It was between the Quest 3 and the PCL. I’d love to hear from someone who’s tried both the Quest 3 and the PCL.

One thing I’ve noticed is all of the flight sim youtube channels are heavily promoting the PCL now. I’m not convinced… yet.

I always tell my kids that a product that gets advertised heavily is probably not going to be good enough to make a reputation on its own merits. Pimax’ heavy marketing offensive makes them less, not more desirable to me. It also does cast the people shilling for them on the tube in a less than favourable light.

Just borrowed a complete G2 cable assembly that works. Headset is dead and windows is not yet on the fatal version.

well if you get stutters when looking out the side that could indicate you are not maintaing set frametimes or FPS. WWhat is your GPU Frametimes?

At 90Hz you need to keep it under 11.1ms…

With my current settings, FPS is between 80-90 and framtimes running between 10-11ms. Still seeing terrain stutter when flying low.

IIRC terrain is rendered at half the framerate of units
