SCAM ALERT!: URGENT REGARDING EBAY GPU SALES

A public service message, just in case.

So in another thread, I mentioned that the only place that seemed to have the new 50-series graphics cards was Ebay.

Later in the day, a vague memory resurfaced from the days of the 40-series debacle, and I did some quick searching.

Did not take me long at all to find multiple examples of whut’ I was looking for:

Suspicious things about the offer below:

  • Price too low. Scalpers are asking up to 7K for these cards
  • Seller explicitly does not accept returns.
  • Unobtrusive admonition to read the card description

The card description: Read the disclaimer!!

CAVEAT EMPTOR!!

Wow, shouldn’t ebay shut that ■■■■ down?

they will not because ebay makes 12%

I tried a search for that user, bruuu_59, but couldn’t find him, so…

Edit. Disregard! Still up.

Edit part deux.

Some sellers have these disclaimers:

So, would a scalper bot go for a scam like this?

who knows?

Does somebody have a picture of a 5090?

It’s a shame that some sellers try to take advantage of people like that, especially for in-demand products like the new GPUs. It’s always important to be vigilant when making big purchases online, especially from unknown sellers. Hopefully eBay steps in to address these kinds of listings.

I have a deep hatred for those that prey on the weak and vulnerable. Such as people who use scalper bots so they can then sell at inflated prices.

Doesn’t matter if it a GPU or concert tickets, even if only one scalper bot using a-hole has been burned by this, then as far as I’m concerned

well actually guys these particular ebay sales like this one are intened for the bots out there that will buy it and since the bots can not read the description end up buying it.

so these types of ebay sales are like an anti scalper sale not intended for users wanting to buy a real card…

I don’t like them any more because a real buyer could end up under the same trap and purchase it but not sure what would happen in the end as either way there is not product for sale and it has to be against the rules somehow…

it is shady at best but ment to combat the bots that buy up all cards sight unseen… either way buyer beware…

I‘ll just wait until supply and demand settles to a normal level. Until then, let the suckers take all the expense and teething issues.

Summer (Europe) kicks in starting May/June. A much better time to buy hardware.

Scammers are awful people, but remember this is happening because nvidia cut off production of the high-end 40 series with either an inability or, more likely, the desire not to produce enough 50 series to fill the demand - heck they didn’t even produce enough product to fill the shelves!!

Scalpers and ridiculous prices are what nvidia wants…
