SF2 always calls to me....

I’ve managed to stump myself once again this morning. So here is the scenario:

I’m trying to fly A-1s out of Nakhon Phanom RTAFB in the Steel Tiger campaign (Vietnam). When I load that campaign and select A-1s and Nakhon Phanom, for some reason it loads the South Vietnam map and I’m just getting default textures. If I go to create a Single Mission and select Nakhon Phanom and North Vietnam, the textures for North Vietnam (Green Hell 3.5) load correctly and it looks gorgeous. I tried editing the campaign.ini, but just changing the CampaignMap=SouthVietnam to VietnamSEA results in a freeze.

Any ideas? I’m wanting to start a campaign against the Ho Chi Minh trail flying A-1s out of NKP but I’m running up against a brick wall on getting the proper campaign map to load.

The Steel Tiger campaign uses the South Vietnam map, so that part sounds correct. If you try to run that campaign in the North Vietnam map (“VietnamSEA”) it will crash and cause all sorts of issues…

Did you install Green Hell 3.5 in the South Vietnam folder as well? You need to install it there, but rename the VietnamSEA_Data.ini that GH 3.5 installs to SouthVietnam_data.ini. (I think those are the file names - double check)

FWIW - the North Vietnam and South Vietnam maps are the same map. The difference is what target areas are placed and active. North Vietnam has target areas in the heavily defended North. South Vietnam has softer targets in Laos, Cambodia, and just north of the DMZ with no SAMs and light AAA. It was created specifically for A-1 type missions.

Awesome info! I’ll get it sorted at home! You are the best!

No problem! Let me know how it works out! It’s been so long since I’ve tried the Steel Tiger and Easter Offensive campaigns. I have no idea what some of those target areas look like with GH3.5…

I’m in business. It actually looks like the Easter Offensive is the campaign for me since it offers flying the A-1H out of NKP with target areas that are more in-line with what I’m trying to recreate (I’m working on a project…of course…) Your suggestion to move the Green Hell .ini and rename it to SouthVietnam_data.ini was exactly what was wrong… Looks great now! That terrain up at NKP is really lumpy…good stuff…!

@BeachAV8R - I highly suggest you read through this combat journal if you ever get a chance. I dont remember how I came across it, but it was a big motivation and source of inspiration for the original WoV AGXP. Some really interesting stuff…

And the sound…is such a purrrrr…

Thanks for the awesome link malibu43. The book Da Nang Diary about the OV-10, which worked SOG support missions often with the Skyraider that I linked above also quotes of the A-1, “There was only one speed you had to remember- 120 knots. You took off at 120 knots, cruised at 120 knots, and landed at 120 knots.”

Haha…that was one of the quotes I pulled out of the book I’m reading now “Firefly: A Skyraider’s Story About America’s Secret War Over Laos” - except he said 140 knots…

“There was only one speed you had to remember- 140 knots. You took off at 140 knots, cruised at 140 knots, rolled in at 140 knots, and landed at 140 knots.”

 Regardless of the specific speed…it’s funny…

Lovin’ the Skyraider Love! I’m so glad I reinstalled SF2…

I forgot I was working on a pseudo DIANE / radar bombing type thing for the A-6. Because the CCIP mod was just too “win button” for that aircraft.

It’s just a new overlay for the radar, where if you set the radar range to 3 NM and fly to the speed and altitude specified on the screen (500kts, 1500ft for LD bombs and 500ft for HD bombs) you can pickle when the target’s radar return (if you can find it) is in the little box.

It works well, but you have to be on speed and at altitude when you release, and it’s tough in anything but flat terrain…

I wonder if that’s the difference in an E model (fat face) vs an H model (single seat)?

Ah…right you are! Probably so… I love that you mentioned the OV-10 too…what a unique and awesome plane. It would be a great plane for marking targets in something like a DCS Vietnam…

The other end of the spectrum…

Just to make All Y’all a wee bit jealous this has been flying around Chino quite a bit lately.

They are rebuilding up to seven of them across the tarmac from Planes of Fame. One is flying the second one just had its engines mounted less than a month ago.

Looks like something out of the original “Akira” manga…

Nice…I think CAL-FIRE is using them as sort of “Fire-FACs”…

Looking at that weird bird X-Plane could be also interesting playground for TKs SF project. Creating something like that using XP blade element theory could be fun [I mean something that looks bizarre but could eventually fly]
