Sherman Commander - preview

I’ve had this one on my steam wishlist for a while, ran across this preview video. Haven’t had a chance to watch the whole thing, but I like what I’ve seen so far.

One of those games I love to watch being played but I’m too bad to play myself!

It does look in development but it’s incredibly promising.

Looks fun… Too many games so little time

Ex tankie armour nerd hat on - Depicted is the M4A2(76)W HVSS, which was a post WWII variant only used by (IIRC) Canada and the Soviet Union.

Closest WWII variant would have been the Sherman Firefly with the 17pdr gun. Which although had greater ground pressure, was slower and lacked a decent HE round compared to the Easy 8, was my fave WWII variant because it could at least take on a Tiger or Panther without having to shoot it in the arse.

I some how missed the players tank was a 76. The other tanks in their platoon all seem to be 75’s.

At first I thought it was a Firefly, there is anecdotal evidence that US Army might have actually used them operationally in WWII. What made me realise was when I noticed the text was showing 76mm HE being used…

76mm

That’s when I realised (but had to check) that the only long barrel 76mm Sherman that matched, particularly the additional turret armour and wide tracks, was the HVSS.

I prefer the HISS to the HVSS.

I played a ton of WWII tanks in Red Orchestra, as well as a couple of the CoD/MoH “on rails” sections, but now I have Il-2’s tanks if I get the itch.

Sherman simulator? Oh, you mean the one where you get to die a lot in a tank?

I’ll admit my knowledge of WW2 armor combat is fairly "mass market.’ In the past decade or so a lot of scared cows about WW2 have started to be slaughtered, but the majority of what I’ve followed has been air war related.

I found a few interesting articles last night when I started refresh/inform myself on the various models of the Sherman. While I might not agree with all the authors sentiments, I do agree that the vast majority of what the Sherman dealt with not enemy armor, and the majority of armor it encountered the 75mm gun was sufficient for.
