The faces animate during conversations, but when they’re not talking they’re pretty much 99.99% of the time the same resting face.
No one is walking along happy or sad or angry let alone switching between those states. If they’re not talking, they’re not emoting. My guess is programming them to emote without concurrent dialogue would be a much bigger hill to climb.
I’ve been sucked in big time. Currently running about as a deputy to the free state sherrif. Its a fun time. Loving the dialogue options and how Sam comments on my choices. Love the persuasion minigame.
Aint nothing and nobody getting hammered in my house tho ![]()
I would never take offense at an attempt at humor. So fire away dude!
It cant be worse than the ribbing I’m getting at work anyway ![]()
@JediMaster: Is this the “Bethesda Face” thing? Or have they improved the faces in conversation so now it’s more jarring when everyone has Bethesda Face at other times?
@Victork2: Let me just say, good on you for being man enough to take responsibility! Now back to the ribbing ![]()
No real issues yet on XBOXsx at 4K. There is a stutter when the subway moves but I think that is because it’s an autosave point.
It does that on pc as well so i think you are correct
I saw an interesting video on their facial animation issue and apparently it’s because the upper half of the face doesn’t have enough muscle modeling to make it look realistic.
This is why big films have gone to mapping their actors’ faces with dots and a camera instead of trying to do it manually, BTW. So much easier to map it to a 3D model and animate it that way then by trying to hand move all that stuff.
What the **** WAS that?
That’s what happens when you go into game development.
That’s a bit harsh.
I have put a bit more time into Starfield since I was here last. Admittedly it has been because I have been frustrated after about the 9th or 10th attempt after a save in BG3 (talking about a tricky battle or puzzle here and not save scumming) and still had an hour or two of my daily gaming allowance remaining… and I really didn’t want to make comparisons.
Starfield isn’t that bad. I’m not loving the main quest/companions so I am actually smashing the ‘storyline’ and will get to exploration once I’m done with that, because that seems to be where this game is at?
That video. Ugg. Who cares right? But man! That smug bro arrogance. Is he 12 and wants to sound smart? Was he fired from Bethesda and this is his way of ■■■■■■■ on the work of others? Is this his resume? Or is his just typical of the attitudes of overworked, underslept coders? Whichever. He’s a jacka**.

That’s not the vibe I’m getting at all.
What I’m mostly hearing is that he started a crazy project to try to get as close to Starfield as possible in a very short timeframe.
He used Unity and every conceivable shortcut, including 2 plugins from the same creator for planets and for gravity, complains that their integration was everything but “seamless”, and he spent hours debugging it all to end up with “a janky mess” (literal quote). Which he doubts anyone wants to play.
I cannot interpret his expounding on the merits of his game vs Starfield as anything but sarcastic humor.
Though I understand how this video can be misinterpreted, especially if you are not familiar with this kind of madness obsession workflow.
Thanks. Now I think I get it?
Man I feel old!
I’m sure my 55 year old coworkers would understand it, but I doubt my 17 year old brother in law would get it.
Nothing to do with age. Well, maybe the screaming part, but ranting about coding problems is just programmer humor.
@Freak I think you’re right. I see gamergate and Mythic Quest and a coding culture I will never be able to relate to. It’s a personal limitation.
It kind feels like I’m the only one having fun with this game when you listen to the rest of the world (not you guys)
I get its not the greatest game ever made, its got bits i wish it had and bits i wish it didnt but its fun, engaging and interesting.
I trashed it at first. But time and sage advice FROM you guys has made it great for me.
