Why didn’t they just prop it? I’ve propped IO-540s before. It wasn’t easy but my spindly little arms managed it. Still, one can’t argue with success. I’d add, “Poor Crankshaft” but given the horror I put mine through every time I fly I must hold my tongue.

I’ve never propped an IO-540…biggest I’ve done is some Cherokees and Cessnas in the IO-360 range…

Man propping a 540 would scare the crap outta me.
Worse, it was a Bonanza! Propping a tailwheel at least lets you follow through on the pull upright.
