Steam Frame - Valve's latest VR headset

Absolutely. I’m also excited for the combination of Foveated Rendering, reasonable resolution panels and mainstream 2026 greaphics cards. I think A good working DCS VR that runs well enough on high end systems without the need for super computers could already be really powerful.

I know very little about this or Steam’s other upcoming hardware. But I do know this: my now best friend, who for years I only knew through Rise of Flight and IL2, is ditching the PC forever for this. He wants an uber-console in his living room that can handle all his entertainment and multiplayer needs. To him this is it and not a moment too soon. Building super-computers every three years is the domain of the very rich and the very dedicated. Together, that’s too small a population to be sustainable.

I am similarly not that excited , cause my HW is not excited either

and my HW is relatively capable . but my squad mates have even older HW than me . when it comes to MP , we dont fly DCS MP , and its my preferred MP sim . we play WT MP , cause DCS MP is not running reasonably well for them .

my Logi G29 is already permanently hooked to my PS4 . who knows , maybe I will end up even flying on console too

:star_struck: Really?! I’d love to try and play WT in a group! You probably all speak German, though?

ein bisschen  I can ask them if they want to practice some english from time to time …

So there were two of these f**kers behind me, three f**kers to my right, another f**ker to the left “.

No stress, no pressure, just saying. Maybe it can be a good idea to learn German too.

Yep. If a standalone headset can run VTOL VR…it will be an instant buy for me.

I’m so not this. And I get that I’m probably increasingly in the minority on this. When I sit in front of my TV…it is to watch TV (which isn’t all that often). I have cooked a meal, sit in front of the TV and watch the Tour de France or For All Mankind, watch an episode…and then after an hour or less I’m good. Then I want to stand up, walk to my PC rig/desk and sit there and make that a separate experience. Of course…I could see sitting on my couch and playing VTOL VR there. I will say also though, I’ve never owned a console (X-Box or anything). My last console was an Atari 2600 about 45 years ago… so I never experienced the couch gaming thing…

A good friend of mine has a huge 4K Oled TV attached to his PC in the living room. He sits on the couch and we play games via Steam sometimes.

In Arma Reforger and that other WW2 MMO shooter he is unable to read any of the text. He has to get up and walk to the TV to read it. This makes some games quite difficult, and I bet any flightsim would be one of them. Obviously he does not play any.

I prefer a 27“ or 32“ monitor on my desk, too. The couch is for slacking off.

For me, that damn PC is work. Which is odd because no job I’ve ever had has required me to sit at a PC. Maybe it’s the VR headset. Maybe the feng sui of the room is all wrong. But the thought of going up there just kills me. I can’t do it anymore. Well, not true. I do it when peer pressure to play IL2 forces me too. And I do occasionally enjoy it. But I would much rather we all play Sea Of Thieves so I can be here, in my happy place.

I am forced into having a ‘man cave’… Yeah I know tough life right?

I need my own space because heaven forbid I would interrupt SWMBO and her latest episode of Downton Abbey so I could play a ‘gasp’ computer game

That said I am not averse to the idea of this forthcoming hardware from Valve as my next ‘gaming rig’, especially if it will play all the games in my Steam library. Which is everything except DCS.

Norm takes a look…

That’s an excellent interview to go along with what appears to be a very impressive headset. Crazy that the eye tracking for wireless foveated streaming is always on. Might be time to upgrade the home WiFi. And four ways to play.

Yeah, I was about to put the Q3 on the Troll to Troll X-Mas wishlist, but I’m going to wait until this one is out.

It’s interesting that Norm compares the Frame’s image to the Q3’s and isn’t convinced that it’s superior, although he does make a good point about the improved processor.

Yeah, the resolution of the Frame is only slightly better than the Q3, and the FoV is a few degrees wider. So I guess the PPD is probably so close that you can’t distinguish between the two.

I like the apparent ability to modify the Frame, the WIFI 6 cordless streaming and the Steam console.

Would’ve liked color pass through cameras though. But maybe as an addon…?

Agreed, there is a lot to like about the Frame. It will be good to see how it looks 6 months from now in comparison.

The great thing about Steam Frame is that you shouldn’t need to:

  • it comes with a dedicated WiFi 6 router as a USB stick to stream directly from pc, avoiding the home WiFi, and there are 2 radios in the headset itself: 1 connects directly to pc, the other to home WiFi only for regular internet use (downloading updates etc)
  • foveated streaming means it uses less bandwidth
