Coming in 2026. Running steamOS it will basically be a standalone computer that can do anything. I hope the streaming and quality will be good. Perhaps even indepent from router and things like VirtualDesktop
I have a quest 2, and one of my biggest barriers to using it is the weight and the spotty wireless usage with my PC. If this Frame solves those issues, I’ll use VR quite a bit more.
Sounds like you need a Prism XR. It made quite a difference with my Quest 3.
Very tempted to buy it if it is halfway affordable.
Steam most certainly means Linux compatible, and it has four times the pixels of my Rift S or so, (2160x2160) so it would be quite an upgrade.
Sexy! If the price is right?
Rumors say 1000 to 1200 bucks.
Which, yeah, would make it more than twice as expensive as the Quest 3.
For below 800 I’d probably order it right now.
Same for that cube PC. If it competes with a Playstation, but you can play your whole Steam library - not bad at all.
They just can‘t be asking too much.
And play online multiplayer without a monthly fee… I would have been much more active on console if it wasn’t for regular payments.
LTT has some more infos.
Such as:
Apparently 110° fov (my Rift S has 85°), and there is another version of the head straps so you can have one on top.
The specs are kinda meh, unfortunately. 16Gb RAM an 8Gb VRAM paired with a Zen4 SoC. They’ll have to price that very competitively for it to be successful.
But man do I hope it takes off.
I cannot stop thinking about this thing.
440 grams including the battery, and the battery being in the back, that sounds pretty amazing.
Again I can only compare to my Rift S, but that one is 550g and almost all of that is in the front. It is manageable but after a while it can become annoying.
Personally, I’m really hoping it could run VTOL VR and perhaps a few other games (I assume things like DCS and MSFS to be too much of a stretch) completely standalone. That would be amazing and put it ahead of the quest for me.
Seems to me like a quest 3 experience with integrated, good performing, wireless streaming and the possibility of foveated rendering for less than 1000. It looks very close to the sweet spot for most Flight Simulator users, especially if it can run hassle free in steamVR, with the least amount of 3rd party apps in the background (I still believe some openXR thing will be needed to force foveated rendering through the pipeline)… And it running VTOL VR natively could mean we have a portable VR flight sim experience for the first time ever, which could be a game changer. I am holding off my Quest 3 purchase for now.
Yeah, that would be nice!
Seen this, BTW?
Will the Steam VR headset support Open XR, or is it native only…?
No info on that yet, but it being from Valve and running on Linux I expect it to be compatible, either on release or relatively shortly thereafter.
Absolutely! Just haven’t decided where to buy it yet, though. Since it will also have HOTAS support it makes more sense to get it on steam than on the Meta shop. If it’s cheap enough I’ll buy it everywhere ![]()
We should keep in mind though, the chances of it successfully running VTOL VR natively on a mobile ARM chip through a compatibility layer are a little thin. But that could be a true sim revolution, being able to play a VR flight sim without all the hardware and hassle… We have some months before our dreams are shattered anyways… ![]()
Apart from the Frame itself, Valve is already doing great things. Even if the product itself sucks, if these things succeed and stick, it will have been a great project:
- Dual radio and dedicated Wi-fi 6 router in a small USB stick for direct communication with VR streaming from PC
- Improved VR on Linux
- x86 emulation on ARM on Linux
