Suggestions on GPU for WoW:TWW

Hey Guys,

I am trying to determine a decent upgrade for a GPU for WoW:TWW. Here are the specs of the 2 PC’s I am going to upgrade for my sister and Brother-in-Law:

  1. Win 11 64bit

  2. Intel 12600K 4.5ghz 32GB DDR4 1070Ti.

my sisters PC:

  1. Win 11 64bit

  2. intel 9400F 4.ghz 32GB DDR4 Ram 1070gpu…

they both play @1920x1080 60Hz.

now while out in the wild in WoW they seem to do pretty decent in FPS but when it gets real busy like in a RAID or in a City with alot of players the FPS really come down.

The 12600K we just upgraded from a 7600K and the 1070ti. for the 9400F and the 1070 both work well the CPU’s do not seem to be the real issue but the GPU could use a bump up.

I was thinking either a 2080 / Ti or a 3070 would be a good choice from nVidia. we do not need the latest and greatest and cost is a factor.

not exact on the budget but trying to get it since there will need too be 2 GPU’s Purchased at once about 600usd for both…

I looked at the reccomended specs on Blizzard and the CPU’s seem fine but they were not too specific on the GPU. I figure anything better then a 1070 / Ti would be good. I Do not think a 4060 would be needed but maybe I am not sure that is why I am here asking for some suggestions…

The Base PCC’s will not be upgraded further I just need to get a bit better GPU if you please…

Thank you

Right now a valid approach could be to filter for 16 GB cards and sort by price ascending.

This will make you see models that will hold up well for a couple of years. Probably something like an AMD RX 7600 XT will be in there.

well that is the thing they only need it for WoW, they do not play any other games so I do not need anything that powerfull…

I don’t mind buying used, it is usually fine keeping with a good seller on ebay…

The best price per fps comparisons are done by Hardware Unboxed, they even do them for actual prices in 3 markets. US, EU and AU.

Example, including previous gen hardware:

That’s useful! This chart ends at 9060XT though, and has no Nvidias older than a 4060.

Let’s check Nephilim’s mentioned GPUs against this:

From this video, it appears that the RTX 3070 is a bit slower than the RX 9060 XT. Add to that the limitation of 8GB VRAM and you can only conclude: a used RTX 3070 should be a lot cheaper than a brand new RX 9060 XT for it to be interesting.

The RTX 2080 Ti is much slower than the 3070, so it’s hard to say that is a good buy, also with its age, likely wear, noise, and lack of support for modern upscaling.

My conclusion: if you can find a good condition 3070 for close to $200, get that. Otherwise, just get brand new RX 9060XTs. Even at $350, the price/performance is unbeatable, plus you get modern upscaling, low power use and thus quiet cards, with no wear.

I’m surprised my 7800 XT is better than a 9060XT. Also the price of the 9060 XT with 16GB seems really low. Probably a good choice in this scenario.

Would’ve been interesting to see a 9070 (XT) included in that chart.

well it appears the 9060xt is only a 128bit bus speed… that is a bit low and I really not caring what the vram is if the bit bus is so low…

the other thing it being amd I have no experience with amd and hear alot of bad things about the software… I am hardly sold on AMD and the FPS in WOW is all that matters…

I will try and compare some nvidia cards and look at some other amd cards… but they dont seems cheaper in a way…

EDIT: Well been looking at the 3070Ti but they are a bit spendy for mostly used… I will keep digging maybe post on the WoW forums…

I‘ve been using AMD for 5 years now and the software is one aspect that will make me stay with the brand. And the price.

ok what would be a good nVidia 3070 - AMD equivelent

I think the performance equivalent would roughly be an RX 6800 XT or RX 7700 XT.

Both have more memory, though. That could blow up price on second hand markets.

Then again, many 6800XT users, like me, will consider switching to 9070XT this summer.

Yes, the used market for 6800XT’s is up there around 350-450usd… I can get a 3070 for like 250-350. so I guess it is a no brainer.

I will let my sister know as I think I may go with the 3070’s for both of them and call it a day. it will be a jump up from the 1070 that is sure and I think the 1080P rez they run the Vram will not matter much and they have no plans on playing any other games currently and for the foreseeable future…

I will have a look at those 9070XT’s but not sure will see what they want to do…

A brand-spanking-new RX 9060 XT gives RTX 3080 performance, uses less power than the 3070, supports better upscaling than 3070 and also costs $300 if you’re happy with the same 8GB VRAM. For $60 extra, you get 16GB.
