Hey all, I’m interested in knowing how hardcore we all get when we sim. I devised a survey to figure out how many real-world procedures we try to simulate when we fly. Help me out by answering the questions – it should take about five minutes. I’m curious to see how deep down the rabbit hole we as a community go!
Note that you will need to log in to fill the form, but IT WILL NOT RECORD YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. It’s just there to make sure no one answers twice.
I think that your survey targets a small part of the flight sim community toward real-world pilots (or those with significant real-world training). So your sample size/answer set may be skewed.
Do people really do all that stuff in a desktop sim? I certainly don’t, but then I have to for work, so I’m probably looking for something a little more relaxing when I’m simming. Occasionally I will practice proper procedures and approaches at a technical airport if I have a real trip coming up to that location (Queenstown NZ springs to mind).
Realistic could mean more than systems depth and integration as well. In other words, how accurate is the flight model? That might be weighted higher by an aerobatic or rotor pilot. A bush pilot might be interested how the aircraft reacts to floats or a heavy asymmetrical load. A corporate pilot might look for climb performance at different fuel loads, and if the jet needs to be step-climbed.
@BeachAV8R is probably going to weigh heavily the cleanliness of an FBO’s crew car.
when we simulate flying airliners as a real pilot.
This is probably an interesting survey for flightsimmers who simulate hauling heavy iron around the globe.
However, there’s a lot more to flightsims than that.
I know a lot of flightsimmers who are very ’hardcore’ about flightsims like DCS, and they will show up in the survey results as extremely casual
So, if you want relevant answers from relevant flightsimmers, you should make a note that you’re looking for virtual airline pilots.
I would have spent more time on the survey, but I was reading 12 pages of FDC NOTAMs looking for random adjustments to RNAV approach minimums. I will be thrilled when we reach the data streaming technology level where procedural changes occur to plates automatically and reflect the in-effect NOTAMs.
Doing FO duties there…?
I’m glad that the NOTAM nonsense is getting some attention, at last!
NOTAM is a great way to hide important information and is a product of the days of the telex…
I’m the Captain everyone loves. I get my FO’s coffee, I try to keep the plane in the hangar to allow them to preflight out of the rain, and I almost never eat a bean burrito before a long leg…
OK…a little bit confused here…I took the survey and when I finished a screen popped up that said: Please do NOT attempt to fly a real aircraft!…I don’t think it liked my answers.
