The day Microsoft Killed Mixed Reality on Windows

That should be criminal. While Iā€™m very happy with my Quest 3 and wouldnā€™t go back to the HP Reverb G2, itā€™s still a fine headset for sims. Itā€™s awful that MS decided to cut its lifespan short like this, considering that in the 90ā€™s-2000ā€™s PC peripherals could be expected to last a decade or more.

So remember everyone - the next time Microsoft jumps on a trend with their own open spec and a bunch of money to undercut the inventors or innovators that came before them, DO NOT BUY OR SUPPORT THE MICROSOFT SOLUTION.

They have shown over and over that they will abandon you at their own whims.

Yes it is, although I have no basis for comparison.

In a way I have to thank Microsoft. Not that I had any intention to ā€˜upgradeā€™ to Win11 anyway, but they have made that decision so much easier. Looks like Win10 will be the last Microsoft OS I will run.

Once that is no longer viable, looks like a flavour of Linux (and a VR headset that is compatable) is the go.

Well, your HP Reverb is now more compatible with Linux (thanks to projects like Monado) than it is with Win11 - the motion controllers are reportedly still not working though.

I have actually never used the controllers (apart from calibrating them). All my use is seated flight or racing sims. And, I donā€™t have the space in my office/man cave to be swinging my arms around wildly

Microsoft calls this embrace, extend and extinguish. Theyā€™ve been literally at this for decades.

Iā€™d never heard that term before. Good read, and exactly right.

In this case they created something themselves, hyped it up, and cut it down. Itā€™s so stupendous but they can pry my G2 from my cold dead hands.

Whoa whoa whoaā€¦ this is getting too real for me. I have a HP Reverb G1. What is the risk forme going on?

Is it going to stop working with Elite Dangerous and other Steam VR titles?

TLDR: To continue use of HP virtual reality headsets, a Windows 11 23H2 or earlier version must remain on the host computer.

A little thingamybob that sets a flag in your OS to make sure it will not surreptitiously upgrade to 24h2. Because FRAK Micro$oft. Bastiges.

OK so, as long as I keep my Windows 10, all is good?

Beside that- thank you all guys, I got really worried.

Did you update to Win 11 24H2?

:raised_hands:

Yes brother, we have a year and 2 weeks to test and fix our setup on Linux: after 14 Oct 2025, Windows 10 will not be patched anymore for regular consumers.

Keeping a Windows 10 pc connected to the internet will get risky in a matter of weeks or months after that. There will be drama.

Yep, test drove Manjaro for a while two years ago when my old computer was having some issues(faulty memory, windows couldnā€™t deal with it). So many games work great on it now. Still waiting for sim companies to wake up and support it better, both on the software as well as peripheral side.

Iā€™m an Odyssey+ user. Yes, we got screwed bigtime by Microsoft. There are no workarounds, ā€¦at least none that Iā€™ve been able to find. 24H2 removes all critical WMR support and drivers from the operating system, and if itā€™s been over 10 days since your upgrade, there ainā€™t no way to fix it. Iā€™ve done a LOT of researching over the past 2 weeks. Iā€™m in the preparation process of reflashing my computer with a Win 23H2 ISO and starting from scratch. 23H2 has security updates & support up until end of 2026, ā€¦but Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll have a new headset before then, especially since thereā€™s supposedly a lot of the new headset offerings coming out this year in 2025, including Valve Index 2 (?). Even then, Iā€™m sure Monado or some other site will have some sort of replacement software & functionality for WMR down the road in the future, but they certainly donā€™t have it now, and Iā€™m not holding my breath. There have been some really great videos on YT concerning how to prevent your computer from updating/autoupdating to 24H2 (including downloadable apps like GRCā€™s InControl), as well as those providing links to the hidden apps we need in the microsoft store (such as the Samsung HMD Odyssey+ Setup app, or the one for the Reverb G2). For those with headsets that no longer function because of 24H2 and you canā€™t get a new one just now, donā€™t sweat it. It is a ā€œPAINā€, but you can peform a fresh re-install of Win11 23H2 (or Win10 22H2) from an ISO. Donā€™t look for it over at Microsoft though, because theyā€™ve ā€œremovedā€ (or hidden) all versions of Win11 prior to 24H2 from their main website. The good news is that you can get it over at UUPdump. net. Now the bad news, ā€¦there is a ā€˜catchā€™ here if you want to use your old existing headset. Microsoft will probably be ā€˜completelyā€™ removing WMR and WMR Portal apps from the Microsoft Store at end of this year, and if Monado or someone else doesnā€™t create something to replace it by then, then weā€™re looking at headsets that wonā€™t function anymore. Just pray MS Store donā€™t remove it any sooner than that. But like I said, 2025 is supposed to be a good year for new VR headset releases, this may be the year to get that new one.
