There's always something... PSU edition

For the records, I am starting to have a noise in the power supply unit of my PC
It’s the Coolermaster PSU GX 750W

For now the issue is simply the main fan making a constant noise like something is gently touching the blades as they spin, making halfway between a rattling and a buzzing sound. Definitely the bearing of the fan.

I will try to fix it from the outside first (with the PC off, of course), pushing against some of the fan’s parts to see if it tilts or oscillates.

Replacing the unit would be a pain in the … neck. Not money wise, but because the cables are a bit everywhere it would easily take a few hours to make sure I don’t damage anything…

We will see.

Good luck! But next time get a modular pwr supply. They are so easy to replace.

That’s going to be definitely something I will consider. Just in case anyone who has them, feel free to leave your reccomendations.

Years ago, before I knew that it was apparently a bad idea, I took apart one of those power supplies and replaced the fan…

I bought a EVGA 650W at first. Then i decided to replace it w an 850W but i couldn’t get one. So i bought the EVGA 1000W. It was so easy because all the cables fit. I didnt have to replace them.

Wham! That looks nice!

EDIT: Nevermind, I’m not smart…

Just get the hair out of the unit and you’ll be fine mate.

I am doubtful about that- I have two filters in front of the PSU fan and usually the only thing that gets inside my pc is that grey very fine dust.

From the sound it is definitely a defective/worn out bearing. I overworked that thing for over 13 years.

God Bless it! Go get a new PWR Sup… Shame on you !!!
To be honest i did same . 2 years ago i got rid of my 10+ year old pwr sup. These new modulars are too cool for school.

I’ve been using Seasonic for a long time. They give 10 years warranty and their customer support is on point. Downside, they are a little more expensive. Given that they RMAd my 600W unit with a brand new 650W unit when it died after ~7 years (that was years ago) and the 2nd unit is still chugging along, the premium has easily paid off for me.

The only recommendation I could make has already been made - MODULAR.

Caps & bold for emphasis, not shouting. I didn’t get a modular supply last time around (2020) in order to save a few $$$ and have regretted it since I installed it.
