as I am the present holder of the MS Schneider Trophy how about some another trophy for my collection?
Thompson Trophy
The race was one of the National Air Races of the heyday of early airplane racing in the 1930s. Established in 1929, the last race was held in 1961. The race was 10 miles (16 km) long with 50-foot-high (15 m) pylons marking the turns, and emphasized low altitude flying and maneuverability at high speeds. As the race was flown around a closed course, crowds in the grandstands could easily see much of the spectacle.
in case of any outstanding question about the course feel free to ask. but I think this three-lap course is more straight forward than the Schneider Trophy one.
I did one of my usual tricks and turned the wrong way onto the runway for the first attempt, so I flew that as a bit of a warmup and a sighting lap and didn’t finish the course. Second time was the charm though. I ran the engine at takeoff power (obviously) of 61" and 3000 rpm for takeoff, then pulled power back to max continuous of 46" and 2700 rpm until temps were all in the green, then ran the engine at military power (61" and 3000 - same as takeoff) for the rest of the challenge as it just fit within the 15 minute limitation. Temps were high, but below redline throughout the race, and I saw 350 mph for most of the race on the airspeed indicator.
I completed the three laps in 20 minutes 27 second, for a result of (using Nevo’s calculated distance of 81 NM):
from spawn: 14:20:00
to full stop: 14:40:27
distance: 81 NM (as per Nevo’s calcs)
AVG SPEED: 237.65 KTS / 273.49 MPH / 440.13 KM/H
So not a lot in it from your first run, but I just shaded you by about 4 knots over the race. I could probably be a little more aggressive in my use of military power at the beginning of the race, and I could definitely get the landing roll a bit shorter (I bounced the landing and wasn’t as aggressive on the brakes as I could have been). But happy with that result!
dont be too shy with the power, iirc I pushed the throttle to the firewal at take off and pulled it back only before landing. the temp at LV in this mission is really low. it could get interesting with higher temp.
I missed the stream unfortunately. hope you will post the vid for our watching pleasure.
And apologies to anyone who watched the stream- it looks like I had my monitor refresh rate set too high which led to some image tearing that was causing the image stabilisation on the streaming PC to become all jerky.
Sometimes trying to fix a problem only causes new problems!
I’ll see if I can salvage the footage, if not I’ll update the post with some screencaps
