Too many sims

Yeah - rough problem to have huh?

Sitting here updating my ORBX libraries for both FSX:SE and P3D v2 and it is taking forever. I hadn’t run the FTX Central tool in many many months and see that a bunch of my packages are out of date.

I still haven’t installed DCS World 2 - just can’t handle having multiple installs of that…particularly when my “work” install for writing for the magazine is still 1.2

X-Plane is better…a bunch of airplanes and scenery files…but they are a bit easier to install…but keeping up with exactly WHAT is installed is another matter. Nice thing about X-Plane is you can just copy and move the whole directory if you like.

As for P3D - I can’t bring myself to buy v3 when I have barely touched v2.

LOL!

Thing I hate about X plane is the planes get updates but if you arent paying attention to the forums or developers Facebook page you’ll never know. The good news for me is I only have one plane I haven’t flown for X plane and that’s the 757.

DCS well i think I have 2.0 installed but I havent installed any planes for it! I haven’t flown 1.2 since 1.5 came out.

I got a bunch of other games I havent played though!

Yeah…my problem with X-Plane is I never know what scenery files I’ve installed. I mean, I can go into the Custom Scenery folder and look at the names…but it would be kind of cool if there was a map or something that looked at your Custom Scenery folder and showed (graphically) what areas had custom airports and scenery.

I just spent the last three days learning all about how to fly (and manage) the JAR A320neo and I absolutely love it. The managed settings take some getting used to, but it is a brilliant package. I’ll be writing up a review for the site… With all that has been going on, haven’t had a chance to purchase the MD80…which is high on my list.

I got suckered into buying a plane today that I regret buying…even though it was on sale. The Iris Battlefield Airlifter (based on the C-27J Spartan). It’s a plane (along with the A400M) that I’ve always liked…but the Iris quality is…err…well, not so great. I might grow into it though…who knows… I’ll also write up a review on it as well (sharpening my knives…)

Too many sims? What does that even mean?

  • DCS World, every module sigh - I have a problem. I’m not afraid to admit it. The Mirage 2000C is taking up my time now, but I still want to spend more time learning tac formations, BFM/ACM, two-ship strike tactics, etc.
  • FSX, Concorde X - Now that I figured out how to do domestic/subsonic routes, I’m doubly hooked. I’m itching to buy PDMG’s 737 so I can fly a “real” jet around some domestic US routes, but that way lays real DLC danger - GSX, EZDok, flight planning tools, etc. That $70 airplane will end up costing me $200+.
  • IL2 Battle of Stalingrad - I get into this game way too infrequently. I’d really like to carve a month of free time up just to devote to this game. There are so many wonderful multiplayer experiences to be had here.
  • Rise Of Flight - After all these years this is an incredibly enjoyable game, single-player or multi. Just love that feeling of flight.
  • KSP - I had hoped to make a suborbital visit to the Kerbal north pole and back for our Christmas (Kristmoose?) Flight, but that Concorde took all my time.
  • Silent Hunter IV - My poor pig boat is still waiting for me to finish that patrol (got a convoy in sight, too, just need to plan the approach).
  • War Thunder - The World of Tanks of flight sims, I’d really like to give this free-to-play game a honest try, see if I can get a feel for that magic that I see infects a lot of people.
  • DayZ - Eno, I swear I’ll get to your camp someday! I just have to find some ammo for all these guns I found.

And this doesn’t even take into account sims like Farm Sim 2015, Euro Truck Sim 2, Train Simulator, that keep calling me from my desktop icons.

Too many sims? Geez, I just don’t, three games here and no time to spare for more what with all the DCS mission building and upkeep. Occasionally I will WOWS and in the few minutes left over it is a fast game of checkers.

I had also this ‘problem’ lately

…to solve my problem I started with the final solution → to uninstall things…

Battle of Stalingrad = uninstalled (many updates, many changes of FMs and so on; if we are talking simulations (of reality) I expect something not changing every month)
Rise of Flight = uninstalled (little stick time, I am not familiar with these planes at all)

whats left?

DCS 1.5.2 (this is actually sandbox not a sim, it contains many sims in it)
Cliffs of Dover (I like things which are not constantly updated)
Flight Sim 2004 (I like things which are not constantly updated)
War Thunder (soon to be uninstalled; again too many updates, too many changes…)
Falcon BMS4.33 (soon to be uninstalled; I was just curious if this can replace the DCS for me, but I am afraid it will not)

whats upcoming?

FSX purchased and downloading (but the holiday download speeds are terrible); this will replace (probably) my FS9 install (keeping FS9 as backup). I decided now for the FSX instead of XP, but if I will be not happy with it… see beginning of this post… and then the XP is next in the queue…

And I dont have any other game genres.

…but… I am afraid this is not my sole problem, I feel I am also diseased:
Doctor, I’ve Lost the Will to Sim!

For obvious reasons I am pretty locked into DCS world, with a number of different versions most of my time is in trying to make it crash or reassigning my controls lol… Now I am getting into tacview, and I am revisiting campaign building and scripting… January to spring is pretty good sim time, even with the 3 (almost 4 year old) child equation. “Daddy I wanna go to the park” “No Emma, its cold and dark, we need to stay in and tweak daddy’s FLAK script”.

I do dabble in War Thunder, mostly tanks though… its a great game to jump into and just have fun. I have had some pretty cool battles from arcade to sim, it can be fun and frustrating, just depends on who you end up with in any given match.

I have BMS, but I havent loaded the newest update, NTTR is making hard to look back to older graphics.

I tried BoS, but time and other issues with the game I just havent pulled the trigger on that one. And now my beloved Stuka is planned by Polychop, so this one is drifting further out for me.

I bought FSX for Steam a while back when it was 5 bucks, but I dont think I have even launched it yet, I thought about getting the Hornet for it, as well as the B-17… but again… time…

Cliffs of Dover is still installed, Team Fusion has done some great stuff, and the future looks interesting, but umm… time…

I tried World of Warships… it has AI planes so that counts right… anyways played for a few days, then it got super repetitive, so I havent reloaded it since I rage quit my Windows install.

So not so much too many sims for me, just too much DCS… I havent even touched the M2000C yet… and the Spitfire, L39ZA, and F-5 are coming up soon… ugh.

For quite a long time now, I’ve personally been in a sort of ‘post-scarcity economy’ mode for games, in that I have more than I can possibly play. This means the dynamic shifts from how much stuff costs to how much of my time is it worth.

I imagine we’re going to see more of this of the coming years, in that people will launch new games and sims and even if they were free I still wouldn’t try them. It means that the initial marketing has to be pretty specific or I’ll see the only ‘cost’ as the install time even being too much of a barrier.

Games will get more niche based, as people have more choice than time, and the itch to scratch has to be increasingly specific.

This is me at this point as well. I have something 130 games in my Steam library…and I’ve played probably a dozen of them. The games I really want to play - I don’t even have the time to. X-Plane, FSX, and DCS have been the biggest winners of late.

I got 188. With maybe 20 installed. Im horrible! I use to by games and play them for an hour and then forget about them.

I got a bunch of Xbox one games that I dont play much of either.

Currently X Plane is the winner, But while I fly I normally play some FIFA or NHL 16 on XBox one.

I need to quit buying stuff cuz it looks cool…

One observation about number of games to choose from is that the ‘tyranny of choice’ comes into play for me. The more I get the less different titles I play.

It counter-intuitive, but interesting. Ever since I went over ~500 choices of things to play, I’ve just settled down to a very specific set of things I’ll do, i.e. like 3 or so sims/games. Weird.

Great article and very true (I feel). Back in the day when we had a game or two come along every couple of years…you sort of attached yourself for a period to each. I can remember waiting to open my Christmas present of Microprose F-117A and knew that I’d settle in for months and months of gameplay. Same with some of the older Jane’s titles.

I got 299 time problems in my steam library. :scream:

Yeah, I have the “too many sims” problem as well. Add to the issue are the distractions my family members get me that take away from simming. There’s Black Ops 3, The Witcher 3 (well, I picked that one up), and Fallout 4 to name a few. To complicate things even more, I have a multitude of unfinished games that I vow to finish… Alien Isolation, Skyrim, XCOM, Tomb Raider and the list continues.

As for P3D, I tried to get into V2 but it did not play nice with some of my favorite scenery, particularly my TropicalSim stuff. Even with the converter tool, I experienced some issues. For example, TIST is my home airport and I had to convert it to get the terminal to show up. Unfortunately, there’s an invisible hole on the way to general parking, which causes my aircraft to crash. I’ve decided to skip V3, at least for now.

DCS World is my goto sim, but I find myself just buzzing airfields and enjoying the scenery. I’m not doing combat sorties or the sort. Interestingly, I haven’t touched X-Plane after Ver. 9.

@trevorr610 - TIST is your home? I love your home… Was there late last year (almost got the smack down from that hurricane that swerved at the last minute)…

Can’t wait to go back and go across to St. Johns…

I can identify with this problem very well. Especially now that I am a Dad.
It sucks to have such a broad gaming interests, because often times I feel kind of sorry for my sims; the genre is my true passion, but I also like my Destiny, Elite and various other games.

Back when I was younger I was able to allocate as much time to gaming as I wanted basically.
these days I have to be very specific.

Many mates like a good romp in shooter games, my nephews keep inviting me to play fifa, I have several PBEM games of Combat Mission AND I want to keep simming!

Oh and All that has to fit in social / family life and work. Pfew.

I am still in the learning process, but I am getting more comfortable with pressing an uninstall button or just restrain from buying new stuff.

That enables me to focus a bit better on my true passion; combat flight simming.

This always helps sink that home

@BeachAV8R Yep, born and raised but I now call Florida home. Anyway, St. John is a must do trip when you go back. Trunk Bay has a beautiful snorkeling trail with lots to see. Rentals are overpriced, so if you have your own equipment take them.

If scuba is your thing, a dive off the RMS Rhone is one of the more popular attractions. The wreck is in British Virgin Island waters but if memory serves me correctly, you do not have to enter the BVI to dive the wreck (Things may be a bit different these days).

As for Hurricanes…they are a part of “that Island Life!” :sunglasses:

Enjoy…
