Can’t even tell you how many times I watched that clip last night. What an AMAZING experience to be an actor who gets to go up in the back seat of an F18.

They do that with a computer so, technically speaking it’s still CGI…

Don’t they use computer for all post processing and editing…?
CGI implies Computer Rendering of the Scene.
There are so few shots nowadays that don’t have some form of CGI in them, the editing notwithstanding.
Remember that film O Brother Where Art Thou? with Clooney about the singers? Most people wouldn’t have guessed how much computers were used in that to make the skies and trees and grass look like Depression-era dust-bowl and not the blue skies/greens everywhere they actually shot at.
They use them to alter skylines all the time. Some film I just saw, forget which one, they would CG in the Eiffel Tower in the background to make it look like Paris while they shot it in Atlanta or something. Or perhaps to take away something else like a bridge or other landmark.
Clouds.
Trees.
Traffic.
There is literally nothing that can’t be added or removed if necessary. So while a scene may not be entirely CG, there could still be many elements that are.

But I Can tell you, they did what they did in Top Gun 1986,
They Built Motion Cockpits for them to sit in w/ Green Screen Chroma Backgrounds.
