I can imagine the F-18 and F-14 being slightly limited on the airquake servers like 104th, or they will go with equal loadouts at all time.

NAH! It just makes it more fun when you shoot them down with a Mig-21

I honestly think the biggest advantage the F-18 will bring to the table will be Link 16 capability. Assuming it’s even basically modeled, L16 will give a huge boost to overall SA.

I voted F-18 but I’m going to get both.

you are underrating the fact, that 75% of owners of the F14 (maybe aslo FA18) will be unable to deal it properly

None of the above; I am holding back on making any new purchases from ED/TFC, including the 3rd party people who produce products for DCSW, until they rationalize all flight models and demonstrate a willingness to correct the many problems that have existed for so long and continue to escalate with each new patch.

I have the impression that the whole system is becoming unstable and so riddled with problems that putting more money into them is not wise at this time. Even the free game world, with the really interesting and fun aircraft available to a new user, is unusually buggy for something that has been around for so long.

I do not see a rational plan to address the many problems that adversely affect DCSW as a whole; their approach to solving their internal software problems seems to be reactive and not purposeful.

I am not saying that the “sky is falling”, but I am seeing a serious lack of planning and design coherence which will cripple the introduction of complex modules like the F-14 and F-18. Even the MiG-21, one of the most complex modules, has been occasionally rendered all-but-useless by ED/TFC bugs.

I no longer activate the many modules that I own, because each new disaster renders yet another ‘activation’ useless.
They need to revamp their archaic DRM schema completely, if we are to bear the burden of so many flaws.

I’ll sit this one out until they get their act together.

I have the exact opposite experience. Most, if not all, of the modules are quite functional, stable and in a very usable state. I am currently having a great time in the Mirage and have not yet tired of the MiG-21, Ka-50, Huey, Mi-8, or Gazelle! Oh and the Mig-15 and F-86, though to be honest the F-5E, although a very usable aircraft in game is not getting it’s share of flight time due to constraints on my time.

I em encouraged that the modules keep getting updates and that ED keeps putting work into improving the simulation and game. I am also a software developer, so I know how that process goes and, still, I find encouragement.

I know a lot of people have issues with the glass being half empty but, honestly I find a lot of enjoyment in what we have and how it works.

At risk of going off topic in a thread that was just meant to gauge how many player slots I should plan for:

I could go on for an hour about early access, but the short of it is it is necessary in this day and age for smaller developers, and especially sim developers, as people do not work for free and roughly 0 publishers willing to sit around for six years financing a flight sim with the quality and complexity that consumers have come to demand. We talk about the legend that is Falcon 4, but nobody likes to acknowledge that its dynamic campaign, long development time, and bug laden launch effectively removed Microprose from the combat flight sim market, and was a large factor towards the collapse of said market in the early 2000s. Some early releases could have gone better, yes, but to blame developers for that business model is to blame them for a market of our making.

Furthermore now that the pendulum is swinging back towards highly complex aircraft modules like the Mirage, the Harrier, the F-15E, the F/A-18C, the F-14, and the Viggen, you’re most likely going to see more early access. Those aircraft are extremely advanced with highly integrated systems and large amounts of complexity. Those all add up to more hours for programmers, and more outflow of currency that must be replaced. That generally means early access. I’m not saying that everyone has to buy aircraft they don’t want, I respect having no interest in certain aircraft, but to actively not buy an aircraft that you want and asked for because you’re mad at market forces actively disincentivizes the developer to make similar aircraft in the future.

I haven’t noticed any egregious stability issues in the last few patches, with the exception of one known bug involving the F-5E SMS.

Finally, and this is imho, I don’t get the furor about the drm. It’s leaps and bounds ahead of what it was in the days of FC1 or even FC2. You’re activations recharge every month (they didn’t used to do that), it’s more forgiving of hardware changes and just generally far less intrusive. The only program that seems to have problems with it is the poor Fishbed, and Cobra has personally pledged that he will recharge the activation of anyone afflicted by the bug if they email him.

Huh. Out of curiosity, do you have a specific phenomenon/vehicle combination in mind when you say rationalize the flight models?

Having done a bit of reading on what ED does with the professional flight models, I’m pretty impressed at the fidelity of what they render for every PFM-based player-driven vehicle in a server.

If I recall correctly a few of the lightweight trainers (the Hawk and C-101 come to mind for some reason) are having issues implementing their PFM’s, and the fact the MiG-29 and Su-33 have yet to get theirs makes me sad… but aside from those examples I’m blanking at flagrant problems that aren’t acknowledged issues for alpha/beta aircraft (i.e. the F-5E has a few inconsistencies right now).

I think the better point is, if you know of an issue or inaccuracy and can point towards official documentation or source a former operator of the vehicle, holy smokes please let ED know!

on the topic of DRM I would also like to point out that if, by some act of god, you manage to use up your activation you can just email ED and they give you more.

So @near_blind , is the same person going to be AWACS/ CATCC/LSO? Because after we destroy all the Backfires, I foresee a very busy crash and salvage crew, and a very full bolter pattern.

LOL…it sure sounds like it. Sure, the sim has bugs because it is hugely complex. Does it kill the experience? Not for this guy. If you can’t find something fun to do with all the content that is in DCS World and all the third party modules, campaigns, and user missions that are out there - I’d submit that you’ll never be happy with DCS World.
