Valve Index VR

I’ll second what PaulRix says there! Other than the fixed IPD, the Rift S is an outstanding headset. Somewhat cheap and very straight forward to setup aswell, not least because it has no sensors to setup at all.

So a quick wrap up from prior rambling.
HDM
Good
Higher resolution
Excellent sound quality
Switchable 80 - 90 - 120 - 144Hz

Bad

Heavier
Smaller “sweet” spot
LCD feels less colorful
Front video-cameras not working yet

Knuckles Controllers
Good
Detects all fingers
Natural feel
Internal rechargeable battery (hopefully easily replaceable or this turns into bad category)

Tracking Station
Good
Not attached to PC
2 units cover 360 degree of motion
Long power cable

So perhaps a stupid question…but the Index uses it’s own proprietary tracking and operating system right? Can it play all WMR games and Oculus games or is there some constraints on what you can play with it?

Given that it’s Valve, Index should do all games in STEAM …if developer for that game supported it.

I had no issues with launching IL2 or DCS (stand alone exe). But I don’t know how to do RoboRecall (sold only on Oculus Store) with Index.

So far I’ve spend some time in “The Lab” “Beat Saber”, “Sword and Magic?” and DCS/IL2.

Simfreak - Can you post your PC specs? (My apologies if you have elsewhere in this thread or forum and I’ve missed it.)

Intel i7 4820 @3.7Ghz
1080Ti
16Gigs of Ram

…Slightly outdated

And you are still getting decent performance in DCS?

I’m not far off you with a 6700k and 16 gigs of RAM

DCS always performed poorly. And I usually do 1 vs 1 or just pattern work so should be a light load. Latest version it did OK in VR. Don’t know if it’s their latest version or SteamVR smoothing it out.

Hmmmm…I always figured it was mainly the graphics card that would/wouldn’t enable good FPS in VR…and with a 1080ti…

That said knowledge of grapnhics cards is basically what I learned in this video…

…they are not talking VR, but still…my understanding is that the 1080ti should be giving comparable performance to the 2080…or perhaps I missed something.

I have heard and read similar things about comparisons between the 1080ti and the 2080. It’s still a pretty darn relevant card IMO. That said, it’s been my limited experience that simulators like Iracing and DCS are still very CPU dependent and the more ghz you can throw at them the better the sim performs.

Few things about the mask.
Between PC and HMD’s 5 meters cable there is a quick disconnect.

Back of HDM, there is a knob to tighten strap by extending entire back end.

In addition, notice headphones. They are superb quality.

Just like CV1, IPD adjustments available. 58 - 70

Front mask hold by little magnets and expansion slot. I’ve seen little displays on sale for it…feels kind of pointless.

Two cameras…haven’t used them. Don’t know how.

Headset face gasket also has little magnets to hold it in place.
Headset has ability to move lenses back and forward for folks that wear glasses.

And then there is rubber thing for back of head if desired.

Looks like a well engineered headset.
I wish it had inside-out tracking.

What does the manual say about the location of the external lighthouse sensors?
What’s the minimum distance between them, and to the headset?

I don’t mind the sensor so much as long as I’d only need one for simming. When I had a Vive it did kinda suck that the sensor wouldn’t turn off when the headset was off. Hopefully that’s been changed.

Manual is very light on info.
base

Here’s what FAQ on Steam says.
"

Blockquote

Base Stations should be aimed and angled toward the center of the play area. In the ideal setup, Base Stations should be above head height (at least 6.5 feet / 2 meters), angled down by 30-45 degrees, positioned no more than 16 feet / 5 meters apart, and place opposite one another in separate corners of the play area. Make sure your Base Stations are mounted or set on a solid surface that isn’t prone to vibration or movements - bumps and vibrations can cause tracking problems.

Thanks for the info.
I had my Oculus sensors set up with about 1,2 meters apart, on my SimBox.
I wonder if that’s enough for good seated tracking with the Index…
The main reason I got the Rift S was to get rid of the external sensors. Had they only made a mechanical IPD adjustment…
