I’m hoping they give us a mechanical IPD adjustment on the next generation of the Rift. If they don’t then I will probably not buy it.
I had similar setup with CV1, but it still would loose tracking when checking six. With index, I have one base station sitting in front of TV/Monitor and another one on a wall behind me. Works without issues.
I haven’t noticed any issues with mine…ei I don’t hear them at all even though they have a gyro spinning. All I see is a green light and that’s it.
I am inclined to agree with you…
Hm… You got me thinking here.
Since the base stations only emit light (UV?) and need only power, I guess I could just mount them on the walls of the room where I keep my SimBox, and leave them there. They don’t have to be associated with the PC, at all…
Would this mean I have to set up my SimBox in exactly the same spot, every time, or would it be enough to just hit ”re-center”, in sim?
This.
So I went ahead and ordered one of these Index units today along with a single base station. I think I would have “preferred” the Reverb’s visuals, but I think it’s still going to be a bit before that HMD has all the kinks worked out. (If it ever does and if it ever becomes widely available.)
Having spent some time in the new Rift S, I’ll be interested to see what if anything this set brings to the table and whether or not it will keep me in VR for good instead of jumping back to TIR/monitors.
Good luck. I would expect much sharper image…but my "predictor’ is malfunctioning…
I wish you luck. And if you come back saying that since getting the Index you’ve repurposed your Rift S as a bowl for serving guacamole dip at small parties, I won’t feel any regrets at all. Really.
Somehow I doubt that’s going to happen. (I don’t even like guacamole. LOL)
Everything I’ve read/seen on the comparison between the two is that the Index might be a bit better in visuals than the Rift, but it’s the Reverb that steals the show there.
Just remember that there is a lot more to a good VR experience than visuals alone. For me, it needs to be super fluid, even when looking out the side of the cockpit at 200ft and 450 knots to give me that wow factor. It is a very individual thing though.
No you are absolutely right. Being pretty is great, but if the frames are jittery it disrupts the overall experience pretty heavily. Should be receiving the unit today or early next week at the latest so hopefully I can share my thoughts.
Indeed. And one setting doesn’t really cover all scenarios. I’ve found I can get away with lower FPS in X-Plane and P3D than I can in DCS just owing to the nature of the operations. As well, I’d prefer consistent FPS to sometimes smooth and sometimes juddery…
An interesting observation. I agree. That said, so far I have found it easier to get higher FPS in zDcs than in XP. True, a Rift S but still…maybe a difference in the engines?
Have I mentioned that Index has a “nose” hole to see keyboard, just like CV1. I was appreciating that 'feature" yesterday while playing IL2…
Yes I noticed this as well when I was trying the headset for the first time last evening. I have to say, I think besides the sound of the speakers (which are VERY impressive), the thing that has taken me the most by surprise is the additional FOV over the Rift. Feels much less like you are looking through a bottle.

I’m really tempted, if only it weren’t so damn expensive! But I really miss that adjustable IPD… Argh, decisions decisions…
If you are just simming you can get away with just the headset and one base station if that helps any. That’s the route I took and while it certainly was more expensive than a Rift S, I didn’t feel it was that far outside of the range of say a Reverb. Now if we want to just talk generalities about how ALL VR sets are expensive in relation to basic needs that’s another matter entirely
More 1st World problems .
I’m trying my best to talk a colleague at work in to buying it, so I can try it out
He already owns a Vive, so he could just get the headset itself and be good to go.
He’s not quite convinced yet, although he really liked the bump in resolution when trying my Rift S…
This is why I have to fly XP with ASW off. I love the liquid smoothness that ASW brings. But under a load it gets ji…je…juddery. Should Oculus ever drop the ability to make it optional, I will drop Oculus.
