I have a membership card to the battle of Britain locomotive society in my wallet… (a long, weird convoluted tale of trains mixed with spitfires and barbecues)
I’m not massively interested in trains compared to aircraft but if I had to choose between staring at a locomotive painted in 92 squadron colours and going out shopping with my wife the answer is

Choo choo!!

I can understand the old steam train interest, they are true feats of engineering, but as for new trains they are just identical fibreglass boxes with an electric motor :slightly_smiling_face:

I would rather go through a car wash-without a car-than go shopping with the wife .

Being in Austin (and we only just got the power back about 15 minutes ago (come on that should qualify for a badge right, first place I log into?)) I’m actually annoyed that all it took was ~8-12" of snow and temps below 32F degrees to shut the state down hard. We went 38 hours without power, got it back for about 7 hours, and just did another 21 hours without power. For weather that is pretty normal winter weather across 2/3rds of the country. I mean it never got below 0F for the matter, the low was I think aroun 9-10F. Yeah if we had Russian polar weather (-40C meters of snow, etc) I’d totally get it. We are contemplating a shutdown of of water system due to burst pipes and water mains, it’s just ridiculous. Honestly I wish we had weather to justify the carnage versus a utility system built in the 30’s and held together with bailing wire and duct tape just to generate profits.

Anyway as a Texan, I am amused! Also we do have great train spotting here unless you are after engine counting. Within a half mile of my house I can go sit at 4 different grade crossings and watch them amble through 100+ cars long.

100+ cars… holy crap, that would stretch through about 3 of our stations at the same time

Longest I ever counted was over 150, I don’t recall the exact number but I believer it was 164 or so. Looked to mostly be empty auto carriers, so not a heavy load. We do get stone and coal trains through, those are usually less than 60, but the weights have to be absolutely massive.
