That spot is where they put a pole on the schoolyard near the exit. On top of it is a small solar panel, and at kid height a sort of scanner that scans kids coming in on foot or bikes. They get a little doodad for not coming to school by car.

Aanyway, the pole was placed… inexpertly. At first they bolted it straight to a paver. But that is far too light so the whole thing came loose. Next they put in a big ol chunk of concrete, drilled holes in it, put plugs in the holes and bolted the pole to it. But the bolt size didn’t match the holes in the metal, so they stripped and well… The pole stood but it wobbled and leaned.

And that’s when I went 'not on my schoolyard* and resolved to fix that thing. So I took the stripped bolt to the hardware store. They offered some chemical goo that would fix 'em good, but it was glue (yuck) and 45 euros. So I got some wedge bolts. Bill was 40 euros.

I went back to the yard and removed the dead plugs. Bored out the holes a little so the wedge bolts could go in. Hammered them home. They took a good deal of hammering. Good, that means they’ll be very firmly fixed. But now of course the threads are fook’d. So I cut off a cm or so off, ground a stripe so I could use a screw driver to hold the bolt while I applied the force neccesary to get the nuts on.

And then I found out the bolt diameter was just a smidge larger than the holes in the poles’ footer. So I rummaged around in my toolbox for a large enough metal drill. And started grinding them out. For some reason metal drills die real fast, so I wasted two of the conical things to get the holes just large enough.

And then I found out the alignment was off just a smidge. And the violence needed to get them to align would destroy the threads… So that was a challenge. After three hours of sweat, curses, 40 euros of wedge bolts and two drill bits down, the pole stands and by jove does it stand firm!

I should have taken the glue.

ChemSet is the best thing ever for fixing threaded rod or eye-bolts or any metal fixture to concrete or rock.

Archaeologists will find the remains of that pole in a thousand years and the sturdiness of the construction will be as big a question for them as how stone henge was built to us :joy:

LOL, that’s actually awesome.

By mere coincidence last night I watched “American Made” with Tom Cruise.
I quite liked it.
